We filled the sink in the kitchen with water and then immersed them and the overflow went down the other sink. We then measured how much water was needed to top up the first sink. Admittedly I did nearly have my face in the sink as well but I'm tall enough to reach over the sink, this probably won't work if you're very short. I hope the curtains were closed otherwise your neighbours would of got an eyeful.....and probably thought your OH was trying to drown you!
