He has done a course and is now looking for work. As I wanted a new downstairs loo and sink I thought I'd offer him the job. He said his charges would be two thirds of the going rate, trouble is I have no idea what the going rate is! Does anyone know a rough estimate of what plumbers charge. Getting the water to the cloakroom isn't a problem with the new flexi pipe. please don't use a saniflo system. They do block up, and unblocking them is ............ Sorry I can't give you a price, We renovated our circa 1850 cottage and built a large extension. 1, Family bathroom 1, En suite 1, Guests cloakroom and the Kitchen. Plumbing with the new pipes is not rocket science. Have you not considered doing the cloakroom yourself. The hardest part would be boring the 4" hole for the waste pipe. I just need an estimate for the labour costs. OH has thought about doing it himself but when this lad said he was starting out we thought we'd give the job. YS is an apprentice plumber at the end of his 3rd year of a 4 year course. You can do an 8 week course at night school, one night a week and call yourself a plumber. YS gets sent on quite a few call outs to rectfy the work done by some of these. When you say he has just left your place............. YS said you should expect to pay no more than £20-25 an hour (cash) for his labour plus the cost of the basin, loo and bits and pieces and the job, if straighforward, should take a couple of days, tops, depending on if you are expecting a bit of plastering and tiling. Also, as the others say, there are plumbing courses and plumbing courses. A lot of training companies are cashing in on the perception that plumbers earn megabucks. Not always true.
