Do you need planning permission for a WIR?

We didn't, mind you I don't think the National Trust snoopers can have been round recently (our house is in a covenanted area),

Unless you live in an NT owned house, or the houses were built on NT land, its nothing to do with them.

And if you did rent/buy a house with a convenant held by a conservation charity, it shouldnt be that much of a surprise that they enforce it...

We bought our house nearly 20 years ago, from the chap who had been a tenant farmer to the previous owner & subsequently bought the farm. On his death, the previous owner instigated a covenant over the entire farm which in effect means no housing estates/caravan parks/factory units can be put up on "his" land.

This is wonderful, however the way that their inspectors come onto private land, not owned by NT, sneaking through hedges (and yes I have caught them doing this, so I know it happens!) rather than knocking on the front door to ask for access and send stroppy letters telling us to remove whitewash from recycled bricks on about 20 bricks on the back of the house, where no body could see except a "snooper" and take 13 months for every application except the latest to be actioned...I think we are fairly justified in having a slightly jaded view of the NT.

Every time we have sent in an application for anything permanent, they have messed around with it, they have even lost the plans/photos etc on at least one occasion and taken over a year for each plan to be ok'd; we have planted everything in the garden in accordance with their lists of "local" plants, although the neighbours (several sets ago) planted a eucalyptus tree which is anything but local to Sussex and various other "foreigners" ; we even had our windows replaced so they matched the old ones which were still in place in the other cottages (we are half of a terrace of four) and kept the old-style front doors in place to keep the symmetry of the house the same although we'd put a new one in the porch (which also matched!) and other "little" things which we have complied with. One set of neighbours have changed their windows & doors since to a completely different style and also put up an extension which was given retrospective consent in 2 weeks..........................

Sorry I'll step off my soap-box before I fall off :anxious: ! If you work for the NT, don't take this as a personal attack, it's just very annoying that we are trying to follow their rules, regs & small print to the letter, whilst others are being allowed to flout them.

Our sheds, above ground pool and WIR are all built in a fashion that they can be removed within 24 hours, so comply with another little piece of small print & haven't as yet been questioned....mind you where we'd store the water if we took the pool down and the contents of the sheds and the chooks is anybody's guess  !!!

It's the jobworths & small print which make the nightmare...common sense doesn't enter the equation!

Other long-time locals are also annoyed with the NT as they know the old chap didn't want the NT to be soooo pedantic with the homes & buildings already there, more any new-builds etc.

The view from us to the Downs is fantastic, so almost worth the headache, though there are times when even we make "moving" noises  !!!
