camp sites SW Anglesey

Recommended Posts

we've just come back from a camping trip to a site just down the coast from Canaerfon and through the binoculars, I could see the most incredible looking stretches of beach on the south west coast of Anglesey. Stunning golden sands, it looked like The Hamptons! They looked glorious.

I've been trying to find camp sites in the area but not had much luck so far, I usually look on ukcampsites.com.

I don't suppose anyone knows of any good sites around there, near that beautiful stretch of beach?

Sorry, no :(

I go to Angelsey lots, but we're so close there's not much point in camping :?

On one of the island though that you can get to on Angelsey there is a little lightshouse - lovely :D

Unless you've seen the film Halflight - which we did, before we went, and it was a little spooky, the film is about ghosts and it was set near and in the little lighthouse

Clicky

They did it up a bit though, as you would if Hollywood visit :wink: They put it back to normal though, they just wanted it to be stripey

Hope you find somewhere! It'd be lovely :D

Sorry, I wasn't much help was I? :(

We went to Anglesey every year as children as we had a static chalet/bungalow type affair in Red Wharf Bay which was beautiful. I dont know if that is the sort of area that you were looking for but here is a campsite that is in Red Wharf Bay ( I dont know it personally)

From where you were I'd say you were looking at Llanddwyn /Aberffraw/Rhosneigr. My Mum lives in this area.

There is a big campsite at Rhosneigr - pass it lots but can't remember its name, but I can find out for you?

Llanddwyn is beautiful - a wooded area and then lovely sandy beaches but the sand is very soft and difficult to walk in at times - especially if you want to walk to the tiny lighthouse and the National Trust cottages at the end of the penninsula called Llanddwyn Island.

Aberffraw and Rhosneigr are both lovely places - cafes and shops at Rhosneigr. You will have some noise from RAF Valley as the training flights go directly overhead - Mon -Fri, starting at 8am - but it never bothers us.

This is a good site to check out Anglesey

This is the Rhosneigr site

hiya lesley, thanks for that :D

Just checked a map and it would have been around Newborough that I could see.

We had the jets flying over us too, it didn't bother us to be honest.

The beach over there looked so picture postcard it looked too good to be true! LOL

Red wharf bay has been suggested to us which also seems to have nice beaches and I quite like the look of St David's Park camp site.

Do you know much about the North East side? It's been suggested to us that it's more sheltered and so less windy.

We always stay over on the North East side just up the coast from Red Wharf Bay. We now have a tent so camp at a site called Dafarn Rhos which is right next to Lligwy beach. When i was younger my great uncle and auntie used to live on Anglesey in this area so i grew up going and when my mum was little she also used to go on holidays in this area(they used to caravan at Tyddyn Isaf which is a slightly longer walk to the beach)

We love camping at the Dafarn Rhos site because its a 2 minute walk to the beach. This is easily the selling point of the site. So when you are waiting to wash up you get the view of the beach and the sea. :D The beach is lovely too, in the summer months dogs are only allowed on one side of the beach. The beach is a good size too but not massive like Red Wharf Bay. Also near Lligwy is Bodafon which is a hill type thing. We always enjoy walking up to the top and you can park 1/2 way up which is always good. The views are great from the top as long as its sunny!

We always visit Moelfre and often walk from Lligwy to Moelfre as there is a lovely coastal path. Moelfre has 2 lifeboat stations(one in use and one old one) A trip to Ann's Pantry is always a must for us. Moelfre has a small stony beach and hasn't really changed at all over the years.

Beaumaris is also lovely. We always go crabbing on the pier and wander around the shops. We always eat at the Pier Cafe on the front. I havn't been round Beaumaris castle for a while but it looks nice from the outside.

I have been to Newborough once and thought it was lovely. It was very very windy when we went so we didn't stay as long as we planned.

Here are two pictures the first one is the view from the top of the campsite(where the main toilets and washing up facilities are) The second one is the view from the beach so you can see the campsite.

The eastern coast is less windy - but we prefer the wild and windy side, crashing sea and remote beaches. We love the solitude at the top of the island as well.

If you go, don't forget to go to Anglesey Sea Salt !

We found a lovely farm shop last time, it had lots of preserves and honey......I'd have to look at the map to pinpoint it though.

thanks for all the replies :D With having a camper van, we're a bit restricted to moving off site which is why we want to find somewhere near a beach.

The site we stayed on this week was very windy and, with DH and I having to sleep in the awning, we were kept awake by the wind because the awning was flapping about a lot.

Just mooching about here...

I quite like the look of St David's Park, click on the yellow balloon just left of Beaumaris.

It's a difficult decision. If it was just me and DH it would be easier but my mum is 76 and can't walk far so we have to consider her, bless her :D

well, it's booked, we tried to book 'ty hen' in rosneigr but couldn't get thru and no reply to voice mail or e-mail. So we're staying in Trearddur Bay instead.

With a vehicle or without?

Here's a place just a bit further up the coast - jams, honey and farm shop - good for ideas

http://www.jams.co.uk/index.htm

and there's Anglesy Sea Salt - they do tiny tubes of all their salts, great for hampers.

What sort of thing do you want to do? - lots of walking but I'm not sure how much you'd want to do.

You should be able to get a crab sandwich in Beaumaris Poet. There is a good car park there as well, walk through the park to get to the shops.....Molly will have to walk around the edge of the park though. Shops, cafes, Beaumaris Gaol and the gentle walks around the park area alongside the Menai Straits - looking across to the mainland.

Buy OS Landranger Map No.114 and I can PM you lots of places to visit.

Drive up to South Stack lighthouse - park at the end and look at the lighthouse from there. There are about 300+ steps down the mountainside with wonderful views and a suspension bridge across to the lighthuse - but you'd need to feel energetic! Halfway back down the road is a cafe and there is a very short coastal walk to Ellin's Tower -an RSPB lookout where you can watch puffins through their binoculars and telescopes.

Drive along the east coast Benllech, Red Wharf Bay, Moelfre.

Drive to the top of the island Cemlyn and Cemaes Bay.

There is a Mill in the centre of the island - with a cafe and craft shop.....and another just outside Holyhead which also has an art gallery........

You are going for a whole year aren't you??
