my wir is on soil and i was wondering if i could top it up with some nice top soil. i'm going to give it all a good clean out soon and put stalosan down, but thought it would be nice to just top up as obviously i'll have raked up and thrown most of it away.

That sounds like a reasonable idea and means the chickens have something extra to scratch through.

Certainly wouldn't do any harm . I just fill it up with new bedding though - it soon gets dug into the remaining soil anyway.

i just enjoy spoiling my girls a little bit and the earth in the wir is so hard and compacted that once i rake up the old bedding they'll have to scratch sooo hard to loosen it. so i thought a nice bit of soil would be good and give them something else to do

OH reckons I spoil the girls more than I spoil him. Truth is its probably true

I always lob the contents of plant pots into the run - they love scratching through the roots for grubs, and the earth just disappears anyway! (cheaper than new topsoil?) also grobags etc are good for this.
