great article. I was going to ask about the food s"Ooops, word censored!"s thing as wasnt sure I don't have any chickens myself :( but remembered feeding my grandads ones with chicken feed :D I am really tempted to get some chickens when we move house I guess the biggest problem is what to do with them if we go on holiday...

The DEFRA guidelines are that they may not be fed kitchen waste, although many people take the decision to disregard that in their own homes. WE have to be careful not to recommend it on the forum, but can recount our own personal experiences

There was a thread about this not so long ago, and someone with a clearer brain might be able to find it.

If the worry you have about finding someone to look after them in the holidays is stopping you go ahead - don't let it! You'll be amazed at how many people nearby you will somehow come out of the woodwork as either chicken keepers themselves OR happy to look after them while you're away in return for eggs.

Look in the chicken sitters section too.

Hi Tricia, yes that is the main reason for not getting any chickens we are moving house in a couple of months (still waiting to get a date) so will have to see what it's like there as won't know anyone in the area at all, which is a little daunting but I am very much looking forward to it all :D

Are you feeling better today Claret? I "crashlanded" last night with a migraine, fortunately my dad was on hand to help with the chooks etc!

Where are you moving to Jen Jen, perhaps one of us could help? We are rather widespread as I'm sure you've noticed?!

oh you and your bald men - it's an obsession I tell you!

Ellie read your post and said 'how rude' !

 Bless her. I defy her not to have a crush on him after a week.

Better thanks Sha, I had one of those 24hour violent vomiting things - horrid to say the least. The Twyford Hug is not my favourite past-time

I saw there was a chap selling chickens mentioned in the advert near Witney - I googled his details:

Cuckoowood Farm Ltd Commercial strain layers average 300+ eggs per year.

Point of lay birds £11 each In lay birds £9.50 each Minimum order 5 birds Collection only

Breeds: Lowman Brown, Columbian Blacktail

Contact Information

John Treble-Parker

Cuckoowood Farm

Eynsham Road

Tel: 01993 883436

Email: jtjtp@aol.com

Looks like a good price for POL - I wonder whether the 'in lay' birds are the ones he is getting rid of after a year though - if so they should be cheaper.

Was just telling OH that maybe we could take turns chicken sitting if someone else had chickens, he made this face  and asked if a new baby, dog and rabbit wasnt enough lol... though to be honest if we could manage them I think he would love to have chickens too :D
