Hello My first post here on the forum.

 

Right, i have had my eglu and run for around 6 months now, and i have been constantly paranoid that somebody is going to steal my three girls.

The eglu is positioned behind a 6foot fence and large trees that lead onto a main road where people walk by. I have padlocked the back gate and check on my three girls as often as i can but i am still so worried.

 

If anybody has ant tips or suggestions on how to make my garden more secure or how to deter chicken theives, please do share them with me.

 

Even the smallest suggestion would be much appreciated

You could put electric wire round but would need to put notices as well. When I visited my sister the garden next to her had chickens and there was a single strand of electric wire around the top of the fence. How about security cameras or an alarm? Guess all this is pretty expensive.

You could put some of those prickly strip things along the top of the fence 'prikka strips' I think they are called

 

A solar PIR floodlight might be a good idea

 

gravel is good as it makes a noise when anyone walks on it

 

if the trees are yours and climb-able you could take some of the lower branches off

 

it does sound like you have them hidden from view which is good, most chicken thefts happen because the thieves know the chooks are there already - its sounds like only you and your neighbours even know your girls exist

Electric wire eh?? hmmm, might give that one a go.

I was wondering if lodging thorny branches between the trees and the fence would have some effect, what do you think??

The problem is that their egg song can be fairly loud, which i suppose might attract attention.

if you don't move the eglu around you could put paving slabs round on the skirt to discorage anyone simply stealing the house with the chooks in
