Ms Marple
If you like Irish soda bread ( no yeast) I could oblige with a recipe. my family loves it.
Lesley
Carl makes all our bread - to the dough stage in a bread machine and then finishing by hand. We use the bread machine recipe but based on the Roman Army Bread recipe on the side of the Doves Farm Spelt Flour bags.
ClaireG
We had a talk at WI last night from Billingtons sugar & Allinsons flour. They have a website with lots of yummy recipes including breads. http://www.bakingmad.com/
Ms Marple
Sorry to hijack this thread slightly but on the same theme. I have just looked at both of these links re Doves and Allinsons- two great posts i will have to diversify from just soda bread - althpough my boys love it. A question for Lesley - can you taste a difference with the spelt flours? What makes it preferential to wheat?
henny penny
Hi Ms Marple- your soda recipe sounds good so could you post it for me? I have just had a quick look at the sites mentioned - lots to try! has anyone made sour dough bread?
Lydia
I've made soda bread and it's very easy and very yummy but leftovers don't last so make you eat it all on the day (that won't be difficult!) I absolutely love making bread and now don't buy any pre-made stuff at all. I don't have a bread maker and wouldn't want one because it's the making and kneading bit I really like - it's a great time to think, gives your arms a good workout and, if there's someone who's particularly annoyed you recently, you just take it out on the dough at the kneading stage I too have the River Cottage book and am very tempted to get my own yeast fermenting but haven't had the chance yet. Jamie Oliver is a good place to start - he does a basic bread recipe which never fails. From that you can make his rolled bread stuffed with ham, cheese, rocket and eggs (although I leave out the eggs because they don't freeze) or his stuffed foccacia. Have fun! henny penny
Hi Lydia Thanks for that I did manage to cook Jamies courgette and cheese bread yesterday. We are eating half today and I froze half yesterday. Not bad for a first attempt! I will take another look at his other bread recipes ! Lesley
Terri - I use Spelt for everything because I have a slight wheat intolerance. I can tolerate Spelt - some people can - as it is an ancient form of wheat. It doesn't taste different to any other good flour. I don't get the pain and bloating with Spelt that I get with ordinary flours.
Alis girls
My OH announced today that as its his birthday on Sunday if he has any money left over he is buying a bread maker I have no idea where we will put it - are they very big? I have to allow him his little eccentricities as he is coming round to me having 2 chucks and an eglu, probably cos I've bent his ear for ages. So any advice on bread makers would be welcome. There have been lots of threads on this in the past, I asked the same question last year, I think! I'd say Panasonic, I have one and it's never made a bad loaf next. They cost a bit more, but are definitely worth it!
Omletina Kyckling
If you look at this site http://www.mrbreadmaker.co.uk/ there are details on lots of breadmakers, plus you can download the hand books and recipe books - the Panasonic one has some fabulous recipes in it! I printed them off and laminated them so I can use them all the time without any spillages
