Just got three Khaki Campbells last week - beautiful and very funny! Have had a steep learning curve over the last year with my chickens so want to be prepared for all eventualities with the ducks. Read on this site (or maybe Katie Thear's book) that sulphur ointment is useful to have in case of injuries to their feet. Forgive my ignorance, but where do I buy that and does it have a proprietary name for animal treatment? (Have had a quick look on the Net and asked two of my local animal feed suppliers with no luck.) Thanks!

Not come across this but you could try Betadine(it contains iodine ) but it is in a much kinder formula than some iodine solutions. Iodine kills most bacteria dead. It use to come in ie 500mls bottles

 

Hibiscrub is another but may sting and although it is widely available it is I think harsher..would use it on equine if had a cut but it can sting.

 

Both Betadine and Hibiscrub have been used as skin prep in theatres on humans..Betadine much nicer solution(personal opinion)..very good at killing bacteria..which as you will find is difficult in such messy creatures as ducks!

I think you can get Sulphur Ointment from Countrywide - it might be in the horse section?.

Thanks guys! For some reason I didn't get alerts that I had any replies, so have just picked up and will explore the options. I am certainly realising how messy ducks are - we have some kune kune pigs and I definitely think the ducks are the avian equivalent: create a mucky mess wherever they go but still manage to look pristine themselves. They are so funny to watch, you forgive them the trail of havoc. You can tell when ours have been in the hens' eglu run as the glug water is completely filthy and, despite having a big pond of their own, they also favour the pigs' wallow ... never a dull moment.

Sounds about right really ..yes it is amazing how gleaming white they still remain..I would just get some hibiscrub but any human non stinging wound ointment will do..a lot of horse folk use hibiscrub for cuts but it may sting but does kill most germs dead..wouldnt worry too much..

 

I would dilute hibiscrub down if you did decide to use it..sounds like they are having a ball indie
