Broody Hen

Recommended Posts

Hi

We have a broody hen. We have followed the instructions of giving her a few dunks in cold water and during the day we have shut the eglu to avoid her sitting in there.

In some ways she isn't too bad - she hasn't tried to make a nest elsewhere. She is eating etc when out of the eglu. But its now been going on for over 3 weeks and she is still keen to sit in the eglu whenever possible and is still a bit fluffed up.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Dare I say any more

If you don't want to hatch then try popping her in a dog crate placed on a few bricks with food and water. This helps cool her down as the air circulates underneath her. Leave her in here for 3-4 days 24/7 and this should break the cycle. Pop the crate inside your run (if possible) so she is safe from foxes etc.

Good Luck

Tom

I was quite lucky with Snowball when she was broody...it only lasted a week but I think she gave in before I did!

Lots of taking her out of the nest box and putting her in the run. the guinlu run came out as a threat broody cage and she was laying eggs!

Give it a try.....it can`t hurt.

Henrietta goes broody as soon as the warm weather hits us...and tries to hatch unhatchable eggs, and bok bok boks very loudly.....and fluffs up all her feathers...

I watered her with the watering can....which she didnt like...and fortunately a cold spell came and she stopped...its happened about 4 times now...

there is no catching or picking her up...so to try and wet her is the only option...

best of luck
