Fancy Feeds anyone?

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd share....

We've been changed over to Fancy Feeds for a month now..... and there's been no trouble. The girls seem to really like it and the eggs have grown in size!!!

We've managed to find a local supplier and its over £2 a bag cheaper than the small holders we were using :D:D:D:D

so if anybody was thinking of a change.....

I've previously posted about Fancy Feeds and how pleased I was with it.

However, after reading an interesting thread elsewhere I am now not buying layers and am mixing up my own feed. I only started the girls on it on Thursday but will report back if anyone is interested. I'm also going to be giving it to my chicks instead of growers. It also works out cheaper :)

That sounds ambitious! But then I mix my own compost rather then buy the pre-mixed. So what's the recipe?

Tricia

Tis easy :) 4 wheat, 2 rolled barley and 1 cut maize and once a week mix some cod liver oil into it. It cost me £20ish for 75kg of ingredients although I bet it's cheaper in other parts of the country.

That's very interesting!

do you buy a sack of each and mix it up??? How's the eggie production?

Yes, I got a sack of each. Only started them on it on Thursday afternoon but I got my six eggs today. You'll see I have a few in my sig but it includes two non laying ex batts, one ex broody and one CL who is also resting from laying at the moment.

I'm interested :D

Are they being selective and preferring some bits to others, or is it all going down the same?

If it's £20 to mix your own food then it's still cheaper for me to buy pellets. As a 25kg bag from Mole Valley only costs £6.50 or so. That makes it £19.50.

I vaguely mix my own feed-the hens get given a mix of layers pellets, grit and wheat in the morning, along with some poultry spice as Muddles is moulting. They roughly get about 2 teaspoons each of wheat in the morning though and extra in the evening.

If you can buy 25kg of pellets for £6.50 it would be interesting to know how much it would cost you for the mixing your own ingredients. Someone elsewhere in the countey has posted that it only costs them £14 ish for the 75kg.

ive thought more and more about this, and read another reply about the same thing on pratical poultry. the person is doing for her child who is allergic to soya, so im presuming it in the chickens food and then to eggs.

so i wont be able to change mine over to wheat, barley, and maize as my daughter is ceoliac and these are a no no in her diet. :(

what others think?
