We have hedgehogs!!

Recommended Posts

We have a mum and 3 hoglets, about 4-6 weeks old, they came from the next doors garage, which is like stepto's yard, all full of broken everything, engines ,glass, etc, where they were nesting in some old sticks, but someone had been in so mum moved them....to the tortoise box :?

Last night at some ungodly hour, i woke in a panic and went out to the back garden, lucky i did as 2 of the litte ones had fallen down an old fence post hole.

So... please fill in any old vertical holes, as the babies are about all over the place!

My hens are being very stoic and taking no notice, neither are the cats.

We're so happy to have them here, though the babies are incredibly vocal, like guinea pigs on acid!! I think "piping" is the right word.Go out at night and listen to what you can hear.....

How brilliant! I have been feeding hedgehogs in my garden for about 4 years now, but have never seen any babies - despite some noisy episodes of hedgehog foreplay!! (Involves a lot of snorting, circling and nudging!)

I just use cat biscuit (not fish flavour), but I think that kitten food is meant to be particularly nutritious. Make sure they have access to water - sometimes my 'regulars' only want a drink when they call at the feeding station!

Good luck with your little family.

We had a large hedgie a few years ago now and we found its nest by the fence - wondefully dry with grass etc - then we saw a run down one on the road one side of us and another the other side of us and we have not had any others back since then - I was quite sad as I loved seeing her/him and it used to go quite quickly round the garden from about 5p.m.

Update!! they're doing ok. Mum comes and sorts them out about twice a day, we've put down food and water, and the cat biscuits are a hit, we think they're about 5/6 weeks old and are just beginning to munch their proper food. I'm knackered! It's like having a baby again; the worry of it all!

Thanks for the update!

Would love to know how big they are, and at what age they start doing their own thing. Hope they will be a well behaved bunch for you, as you are keeping an anxious eye on them!

Devon must be a good place for hedgehogs...probably all the rain leading to plentiful slug supply.
