Stu58
Hi Can anyone tell me please what is the average age that a cockeral will crow? I have one chicken that I was sure was a boy - I took him back to the breeder who declined to exchange as the breeder was 100% sure the chicken is a hen. The chicken has a much different voice to my other 2 that are the same age (16 weeks.) The reasons I took the chicken back at the time was because so many people have told me that due to the colouring of the chicken it was a boy - i have two cream legbars. One has the salmon marking the other is grey all over. The breeder said it was because the chicken i have been sold is a crested cream legbar not a cream legbar, the breeder said that with the crested version the hens can also be grey all over as well as the normal salmon marking...? I'm still not sure myself that its a hen! Thanks
abwsco
Any chance of some pics Stu? As for crowing some start really early. I've got two seven weeks old who I'm convinvced are boys but they haven't crowed yet.
Sara-W
Hi I have 3 araucana x chicks one turned out to be a cockerel and started crowing at 13 weeks old but I think it varies, some cockerels crow earlier and some much later!
Patricia W
Mine were about 12-14 weeks. It's often just confirmation of what you expected as the tall stance, slight bolshiness, developing wattles are sure signs... But you hope you're wrong! I think some breeds like silkies can be as old as 8 months. Tricia
Redwing
I remember your pics, the grey one did look like the cockerel colouring They can start crowing anywhere between 9 and 20 weeks ish but some keep quiet for longer (obviously scared of the oven dish ) Do you have any recent pics? people on here are good at telling as the stance, shape, legs, face of a cockerel can be very different to a hen

Griffin
My Leghorns were 17 weeks and my Light Sussex around 24 weeks. We've got a black Orpington boy who we hope never crows because we all love him
