Apples

Recommended Posts

the lovely (but slightly crazy) old lady in the next allotment to ours has given us a carrier bag full of (have you guessed??) apples :D

she doesnt know if they are cookers or eaters, but seems to think that there is a mixture of both in there

so, what do I do with them?

are there any recipes that dont have a problem with mixing cookers or eaters?, cos I really dont want to have a bite out of each one to find out :lol:

I ran out of cookers when making this last year, so added some eaters. It didn't seem to make any difference to the end product.

That sounds gorgeous! I have a bag of apples from my mum so I shall be making some of that this week.

Quick question; when it says 1kg apples cored and chopped, is the 1kg the weight before they are all chopped or what you should have at the end of the chopping and coring?

Thats what I thought, thank you! I am in the process of making some now and it smells gorgeous! I couldn't find any hot paprika in Waitrose (shock horror!) so I did half normal paprika and half cayenne. Also, couldn't get any fresh horseraddish so am using most of a jar of pre done stuff which has just got some salt and a bit of oil added so is almost like fresh. Just waiting for hubby to get off the phone so I can carry on blitzing the apples (his office is in the kitchen) and get it made.

Its quite spicy but seems to have gone okay. The test will be in the eating, but I like to keep my chutneys for a while before tasting. Its a really nice red colour though, which I was surprised about. Guess its all the paprika. The only down side of all this chutneying, is I have run out of jars and need to get some more before I can make more yummy stuff. I have a marrow that's just begging to be made into my spicy marrow chutney in time for Christmas.
