This is probabaly a bit of a stupid question, but if you buy day old chicks, do you have to put them in a brooder, or can you put them with a broody hen??

You could try putting them under a broody hen late at night when she's asleep if she's been sat on some eggs. It doesn't always work though and can end in tragedy. But yes, they need one or the other, broody hen or heat lamp in a brooder.

Putting them under a broody could be risky. I would use a brooder.

 

Don't forget that day old chicks will very likely be unsexed......you will need to formulate a plan for the cockerels, unless you are raising them for the table

Hi, I know this is an old post - but what did you do in the end? I have a broody and am considering putting chicks under her, But don't want to do it if it's bad news. In which case I'll get her through this broody session & try eggs next time.

I never put day old chicks under a broody that isn't hatching herself. Unless they are really laid back and a fantastic(proven) broody then I would risk it. Plus, the chicks really must be 1 or 2 days old and no older as the broody will realise that they are more able and strong than day olds.

Good advice I would say. In that case I will get her through this broody session as quickly as I can and buy fertilised eggs if and when she goes broody again.
