batcatz
Hi, chickens got soaked today even though they could have sheltered under house or gone into the house. They seemed to like the rain and didn't mind getting wet. I've now covered the run with tarpulin (until I get some corragated plastic) and replaced mud (was turf I dug up when laying the patio, they liked eating the grass and worms) with bark chips. Most of floor is paving except under the house which is dirt for them to dig in. When they wake up they will have lovely new bark everywhere to forage in. My question is should I dry them? They are roosting now. Thanks for your help. Amanda.
chick wiggle
Nah, they'll be fine, mine like to be out in the rain, shelters always there if they need it and they do dry off very quickly.
Egluntyne
I never bother. When you think about it, the wild birds manage without a hairdryer. It is something most of us have worried about when new to chicken keeping.
PeggySue1
Oh, dosent everyone dress their girls in wellies and parkers then?
Sammy
Mine are bedraggled and looking rather sorry for themselves too. Whilst the run is covered it doesn't help if the rain is coming down sideways

dippy bird
I put my girls in the coop early tonight as they were soaked and I was worried that they would catch a cold.Am I stupid? Also, more worryingly, my new girls ar huddled up under their house and we can't actually get to them to get them in the coop, fox's can't get at them, but now I am worried that they'll be cold? Any ideas? My OH has almost killed himself trying to get them in as it's so slippy outside after all the rain!

JB09
Ha, my girls are the same. They never go inside when it is raining and always end up soaked! I have shut the door tonight (normally leave it open) as the rain is currently whipping the eglu from all angles and going straight in the door even though the run has a cover! Have left a small gap in the door so they can push it open in the morning then if its still raining and I won't have to get wet first thing! dippy bird
Well, if you were my neighbours 5 mins ago, you would be phoning for the men in the white coats! I have just gone out in my p.j's and coat and wellies to try and get the new girls into the coop after my OH's failed attempt.I have been on my hands and knees trying to coax them with corn(didn't work), so ended up pretty much crawling into the run and scrabbling around underneath their house to grab them! I am happy to say, that both girls are safely tucked up in their warm beds.I on the otherhand am soaked and have chicken poo on my clean PJ's!! The things we do!! batcatz
Thanks everyone! I feel silly and also very relieved that I was not the only one outside in the rain worrying about the chickens. I will order some little umbrellas and wellies for them asap. beulah59
We can't reach ours either, so last night we left the hatch to the run open (they've not free-ranged yet, we only collected them Monday) and picked them off one by one as they came out to explore! eggregiousness
Patsy and Eddy came running out of their house this morning as usual, spent 30 seconds pottering on the grass, gave up and ran back in They are now busy preening themselves and glaring at the rain through their front door
