bongus
hi folks just wondered about dust baths? do people just use dirt from the garden or purchase something in particular? was thinking of getting a cat litter tray to put in the run but wondered what to put in it so Tweedy and Deeley can enjoy a nice dust bath. CluckyBucks
Hello there Alot of people use a mix of sand, earth or wood ash in their dust baths. I use dry earth from the garden and put it into a cat litter tray, they love it Also, i would sprinkle a layer of diatomaceous earth ontop of the contents of the dust box to help kill any mites xx xx P.s, welcome to the forum
Space Chick
Hi, I use diatom powder mixed with playsand and earth. You can't use builders sand I put mine into tubs and childrens sand pits, here is a photo to demonstrate
beulah59
My new ex-batts have ignored my prepared dust bath completely so far!

Chook n Boo Mum
If my girls are "confined to barracks" I put a cat litter tray of garden soil complete with weeds intact & they spend loads of time sorting that out! Normally they have litter trays, a small terracotta plant pot (for Blossom as she's so diddy ) and a shallow trug of compost/soil/playsand/wood ash.......whatever's available and dry at the time really with a goodly sprinkle of diatom and/or red mite powder. JanTheDiver
I gave mine their first dust bath yesterday in a cat litter tray (blue to match the cube ); they have eaten the lot!! It contained top soil from the garden, play sand and diatom. If they ate it does it mean that they are after more grit?
ubereglu
When they don't dig there own around the garden, we use dried earth.
Redwing
We use soil (and wood ash when we have it) in old tyres, they also like to sit on the edges of the tyres The field chickens have the remains of a bonfire which they absolutely love
