ubereglu
Today I had my first AS Physics and Maths lessons, (taught by the same guy) and I've now learnt that I have to buy my own textbooks-this includes the Course books and revision guides I'd need. This is because college have basically over-enrolled and so this means textbooks have to be shared one between two and so they can't be let out particularly as it would then be unfair on the people who weren't able to. What's more annoying is that Maths books, (which will cost us about £45) for AS were not at all mentioned when I went for my original interview on the course pricelist I was given. Physics books were, but we still didn't expect to have to pay up for the main course books.... Oh well, as it is I'm searching online and on amazon to see if I can get them cheaper. Oh yes, and this is on top of a college 'resource' fee which you paid at enrolment, surely textbooks should come under this...

Geoid
I know what you mean, I had to stump up £40 for Biology and physics textbooks, and I will have to pay for maths and mechanics textbooks also. it is very pricey ££££

Lewis
Ebay is the best place too look in the summer holidays as people get rid of old text books. The Student Room forum has a classified section with text books for sale too. If you don't manage to get them cheap, keep them in good condition and then sell them at the end of the year to get a bit of money back

Hens@HalfMoonLane
Anyone who's had to shell out on compulsary fees if you are 16 - 18 years old and at an LSC college, ie not private funded may just want to ask the college if they realise they cannot charge you, it's part of the funding agreement between the college and LSC. This includes: materials books compulsary field trips enrichment CRB checks if the placement is a compulsary part of the course ir Childcare courses instrumental tuition if doing AS/A2 Music etc + others A lot of colleges charge for the above but no one challenges them so they carry on doing it. If anyone wants to ask more just PM me, I oversee funding and finance in an LSC college. If anyone is struggling to pay there is also a learner support fund which can be accessed, each college will set their own critria here. Hope this helps. majorbloodnock
Another good place to look for books is www.abebooks.co.uk I've not yet found another book site that's quite so comprehensive, including Amazon.
Old Speckled Hen
Blimey, I'm shocked!! All this was free when my daughter was in her sixth form at school. Now university was a different thing. That DID cost me a fortune but I expected that.
