Poorly hen *Edit - Prolapsed Vent

Recommended Posts

My prettiest chicken Nótt (my magpie) has just been rushed over to the vets by my husband. :(

She has a massive bulge coming from her rear end, it could be an egg stuck (as she hasn’t laid today where as the other that does the same time as her has) or some kind of prolapsed.

She was fine this morning :( its very sore and all her poop is sticking to her feathers. Yet she is eating and drinking and walking around like nothing is wrong.

I do have photos (thought I better take them in case the vet couldn’t see her so I could email him for advice etc) but ive not uploaded as you good folks may be eating or something.

What are the chances that its caused by the massive egg from yesterday (which both were a double yoker, you were right).

Edit ** The vet said it was a prolapsed vent - they have given her an injection to gaurd against infection, put some cream on and pushed it back in.

There was no egg, and was probably caused by the monster egg yesterday :(

I dont want her to lay eggs if its going to hurt her so much!

Will she always be likely to get them? What will happen now?

Poor girl. I would keep her on a blandish diet of weetabix and no layers pellets to slow down egg laying for a few days.

I would also keep her quiet and in the dark for a couple of days, to allow her to rest, and to prevent th e daylight stimulating her to lay an egg.

If you increase her calcium intake when she is back on pellets, it should have the effect of strengthening the contractions which move the egg along the oviduct, whistling the egg through the system a little quicker, not allowing it to linger and reputedly gives rise to smaller eggs. It will also make the shells harder, giving the contractions something to work against.

Hi

We have a pepperpot who is very badly hen pecked (almost bald, under and over - we have the offenders frequently changing their bumper bits).

We went out today to see a very runny, white encrusted vent which was oozing clear liquid.

After popping her in a warm bath with lavender she shot out a softie (in the bath). This was after removing the dried white muck from her vent and seems fine - eating and drinking walking about (have put her in a seperate run).

After clearing the vent it seemed v red but went back to normal (?) but am starting to wonder what is wrong again as we had to bath her again tonight as things seem to be gunking up again and protruding?

Any ideas welcome - please?

Thanks
