Families in Peebles in the Scottish Borders have been set a challenge to source all their food within a 50 mile radius for the month of October.

I read of this being done somewhere else as well - very easy for us to do as we grow most things, including meat........makes you think though doesn't it?

We're very lucky here with lots of farms around some organic, some not, so probably would be able to do that easily. When you consider we are only 44 miles from London, 50 sounds a long way, unless you are in the middle of nowhere.

Then DS has his microwave Angus beefburgers at 2.30 in the morning!

I really like this idea. I hate the idea of our food travelling from the other side of the world when we can grow it perfectly well here and locally too. It is one thing getting tropical fruits and veg but some of the other foods that we import and drag around the country just seems crazy to me.

The sugar free bread is tricky. I wouldn't have thought of the 'hidden' ingredients.

We make our own bread and the recipe we use is Roman Army Bread which uses honey instead of sugar.

Rushes off to look - Doves Flour is only a few miles away from us too near Hungerford! You can buy direct from the door if you take away a crate load - well they used to about 10 years ago or so!

I don't use sugar in my bread - just flour, water, salt and yeast. Makes a gorgeous, fluffy loaf.
