One Hen Not Laying

Recommended Posts

I have one Easter Egger who is not laying. She is at the bottom of the pecking order and is often pecked when she approaches food and water. There does not appear to be damage from the pecking. She is as large as the other hens but her comb is not developed. I have added another water and food source and this appears to be helping with the pecking but not the laying. She will go into the nesting box but does not produce. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks y'all. (Just had to throw that in. Actually, I am quite honored to be allowed to post on the UK site.)

Welcome to the forum.

We don't have 'Easter Eggers' here.

Have the hens been wormed? An infestation can impact on their laying. Over here the most favoured wormer is Flubenvet.

Is she free ranging and having too much food other than layers pellets to eat? Might be worth confining her to the run for a day or two so that she eats up.

She could just be a late developer.

Thanks so much for the reply. You may have heard of Ameracaunas. Easter Eggers are pretty much the same thing, however, to be an official Ameracauna you have to meet some kind of breed standard. Therefore, if you don't want to sound pompous, you call them EEs. Someone on the US website said that they had heard that they can be late bloomers.

We do not have access to Flubenvet in the US but there may be some alternative. Since the others were laying so well, I hadn't thought to worm them at all. I think your thought about confinement may be a good one.

Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum, Mizhaw :D . Lovely to see another American forum member  . How old are your girls? I see the date in your signature, is that when they were born or when you got them?

Hope your girl starts laying soon  . I had to wait months for one of mine to start  .

Thanks for the welcome. Your UK forum is so lively and entertaining. I love the names of all your breeds.

The date following the names of my hens are the dates the hens were acquired, however, I think they were only a few days old at the time.

Thanks again.

I have 5 Buff Orpington girls. Two of my girls, Lizzie (the smallest and lowest in the pecking order) and LuLu (the largest and Top Hen) both started laying at 20 weeks and have continued without interuption since. And their eggs are gradually getting bigger. In the beginning they weighed 42 gr and now as of today they weigh 47 gr. I'm totally pleased with their beautiful strong brown eggs.

Now, the other three are 26 weeks old and not even at peep into the nesting box! They are all fully developed, bright red combs and wattles and good health and weight.

I have had chickens for over 50 years. One thing I have learned is that they are like all women.....each developes and matures sexually at their own time. (Like women starting their periods  ,each is different.) You can give an "adverage", but that's all it is.

So, I wait..I wait..I wait...

But in the meantime I get my two a day, which is more than sufficient for my hubby and me. We're old, we don't eat much!

Cheers,

Ma

I just realized that in the UK you post your dates differently than we do in America. So, October 15, 2009 in the US would be 10/15/09 and in the UK would be 15/10/09. I changed my signature just now to the UK dates so that it will not be confusing.

You learn something everyday.
