sadietoo
Saw a group of people marching purposefully across the Hants countryside today using these and loads in the Summer on holiday in France..apparently it's very good exercise using many more groups of muscles than just walking alone...anyone tried it??? Blackrocksrock
I have a couple as I have a bad knee - arthritis and have only used them a couple of times - you need 2 to do it properly and its supposed to be really good for you this power walking. Guest
I can't bear the thought of looking that daft! I just go to pole dancing classes and end up black and blue instead!
docsquid
I'm actually a fitness instructor and qualified to teach Nordic Walking and I teach a class every week. It really is very good exercise because if you learn the technique properly you will use the muscles in your arm and back and chest as well as in your legs. In consequence you will burn as much energy as if you were jogging, but without all the impact that this involves on your knees and spine. However you can't just learn it by picking up a couple of hiking poles (which are different from nordic poles) and walking with them - the technique is quite different and you will almost certainly not get it right without a lesson. You do need a lesson or two to get you started. It is also great fun walking with a crowd of people in lovely countryside every week. I thoroughly enjoy nordic walking and would do it regularly even without a class to teach!

sadietoo
Thanks for your input chaps I am encouraged to give it a go..I love walking, but don't have time to do loads as I work full time, but anything that fits a bit more in to the time I have available is a plus and don't really care two hoots what other people think of me so not worried about "looking daft".... I always see people out running who never really look like they are enjoying it..that seems daft to me I will search out a class and get going on it....and will report back

Rhapsody
As someone who hacks out horses in a hilly area can I make a respectful request? If you are going to stomp about the countryside looking like a hunchback beetle can you please not appear out from hedges onto the bridleway waving your NorDIC poles over your head? Thank you. sadietoo
Sha, thanks that would be great. Rhapsody, If I do take it up I'll try not to look like a hunchback beetle or lurk in hedgerows, I promise And I wouldn't let other people thinking I look like a doofus stop me from doing it..A chickychickychick-ENN, if you think it is likely to do you good...and with the added benefit of fresh air, just go for it!
