whoopsie
Edit by Sheila; have split this discussion from the Body Shop topic. As I understand it Body Shop is 92% owned by L'Oreal, which is 29% owned by Nestle. Yes it is, and 4000 dead children per day is more than enough to put me off. A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Sorry Whoopsie, not following. How does that figure correlate to Nestle? Is that an estimate of how many children die connected to the whole baby milk thing?
whoopsie
Yep it is - any company associating with Nestle is buying into that and therefore supporting it! Global problem unfortunately.
Sheilaz
Yes, if you want to find out more Chickychickychickenn, search Baby Milk Action. I'd like to emphasize that the group is not against informed choice in use of formula, but rather certain misleading marketing strategies used in this profitable business. BMA campaign for clearer (in correct language!), truthful labelling, (no, formula doesn't make babies more intelligent or healthier than breastfed ones!) and sadly this is still a necessary struggle. I believe it was formed 2 or 3 decades ago when Nestle were handing out free formula samples, for just long enough to stop mothers breastfeeding, and have to buy formula, to desperate mothers who only had access to unclean water. Shameful. Because of this, as Whoopsie highlights, I still avoid Nestle & associated (there are many!)products when I can.
sadietoo
I agree. IMO when Body Shop sold out to L'Oreal they sold out big time. Not only do the ethics not match at all ( where does it say on L'oreal products that the ingredients have been fair traded and not tested on animals??), but there is the whole depressing Nestle Milk thing. I remember a while back there was an issue with contaminated milk powder for Babies here in the UK and it caused a huge furore...its a shame a similar amount of regard is not given to babies in less priveleged societies! drags soap box off and heads off to bed!! Karen & co.
We were told about Nestle and baby milk when I was doing my midwifery Because a lot of companies like this are soo huge they own lots of others, so avoiding them is really difficult Karen x
whoopsie
Karen -BMA do a little card with all the companies and products printed on it - It's not hard at all once you get the hang of it!! They won the case against Cow and Gate AND Aptamil recently for trying to make out they had some new fantastic formula for health - trouble is they are so big that billions in lawsuits don't make a dent. It still drives me mad that none of the formula tins tell parents that the formula needs to be made up HOT to kill off bacteria - as if it doesn't matter. Want to try and go to the demonstration next year!
chickenanne
What is maybe stronger than tryin to avoid Nestle products is also sending a letter to them explaining WHY you're avoinding them, if possible including an estiamte of how much you spend on alternatives. Ha ha that's been going on for the past 30 years, on a regular basis, along with an annual demonstration outside thier offices in Cambridge!!!!!!! BTW this week is International Nestle-Free Week
Chucky Mama
Oh no, this is all very disappointing. I have only just started to indulge myself with bath stuff from the Body Shop as apparentlywrongly assumed that they were a pretty ethical company. Where can I get similar stuff that ticks all the right boxes?
whoopsie
Hi Chucky Mama, try l'Occitane, Faith in Nature or Neal's Yard Remedies. They do some lovely stuff and I haven't found out anything nasty about them so far!
Chucky Mama
Thanks I will have a look, typical though isn't it, I started to indulge when bought some Body Shop stuff for Christmas last year and DD was going to ask for a gift voucher for Christmas. I will have a look at your suggestions.

BTW this week is International Nestle-Free Week Doesn't matter how long has been going on for: if they know how much their immoral practices are costing them they're more likely to change. Don't matter how callous or immoral individual directors are; they will see their responsibility is to the success of the business. Show that their policies damage that and there is a better chance of them changing their policies.

They do some lovely stuff and I haven't found out anything nasty about them so far! Other than the price! I love L'Occitane and Neal's Yard, but lordy, you need to hock your soul to keep in soap. What about Lush? They seem to try hard to be ethical. Anyone got any off-the-radar dirt on them or are they good and proper? Here's a thought - how about making your own? I've toyed with the idea of making some for Xmas.
Lesley
The only problem I know of with Lush is that thay still use SLS in their products - although they say they have reduced the levels. There's also the Naked range.......

Well the laws are stronger in this country but they still get taken to court - though they have VERY big lawyers. They have a much stronger hold in other countries where there is little or no regulation, and they are allowed to use free samples and bribes, which are banned here. It is really scary whe you realise what a stronghold Nestle actually have, which is why there has been a boycott for so long.

There's also the Naked range....... Is that sodium laurel sulphate? Just read up on that and it sounds terrifying. I tend to use Lush scrubs and they leave you feeling oiled which looks like the opposite of what SLS does which is to strip natural oils from the skin. Must go and have a read to see what's in them. Old Speckled Hen
BMA do a little card with all the companies and products printed on it - It's not hard at all once you get the hang of it!! Yes indeed it's here http://www.babymilkaction.org/pages/products.html and if you actually look on the Nestlé website you can get an idea of how many products it owns worldwide
