lozza_9
Hiya I am thinking of getting chickens but just wondered if any one has had issues with any of your neighbours when u received the chickens and now u have them. The reason I ask, I had told a few people we are thinking of getting chickens and they asked me how my neighbours would feel about us having chickens, my response was, well when they stopped allowing there cats to use my garden as a litter tray, then we can discuss the chicken - that shut up a lot of them! one neighbour has SIX cats! Thanks L
theherd123
I have no worries with any of my neighbours. We told one side and they thought it was great, we didnt bother to tell the other side Im sure they will come round even if they have a few initial doubts esp when you pop round with a box of 4 freshly laid eggs! Snowy
One neighbour was worried about flies in summer - but reassured her that they would be nowhere near her side of the garden! (She's now thinking of getting some herself). The other was more interested in how long it would take her cat to catch one! Needless to say, it hasn't done yet! harveypup
There was only one person I was worried about as she is very prim and proper avid "show" gardener and i didn't think chickens would be her scene but amazingly she is the one who loves to sit eating her lunch watching our girls in summer and who collects slugs for them as a treat!!! You may be surprised
Guest
We had a bit of a problem for a wee while, as one of our original girls was quite vocal after laying, and our next door neighbour worked nights, so was woken up a couple of times by the almost cockeral like noise that Star made. A box of eggs once every couple of weeks, and an apology sorted it out fairly quickly though.
mr.coli
when we bought our chickens we were worried that our neighbours would complain but we ain't had any complaints as of yet.
Egluntyne
Just bribe them with eggs. The hens are unlikely to make more noise than local birdsong, traffic sounds, barking dogs, children playing etc.
Nicola H
The only issue I had with the neighbours complaining was 2 weeks after getting the chooks they escaped from the garden and jumped into next doors, she had the back door open at the time and they took full advantage they had raided the bin and pooed on her floor by the time she realised she had visitors .............Woops......... chelsea
someone was right - you may be suprised. People warm to chickens very easily we've had absolutely no problems with the neighbours. I sometimes cringe when the girls are loud and clucky - as only my immediate neighbours know - but other people in the cul-de-sac must be able to hear them. keeping chickens to me is no different than having a rabbit hutch or an aviary in the garden - and with the eglu being a wonderful, clean modern design - there is no reason for any smells/eyesores
jonesyboy27
I have taken the "discretion is the better part of valour" approach had the two girls for 3 weeks we have seven foot fence panels round the garden. They are very quiet (the chickens) so if anyone realises we will have had them for months. Plus will use bribery in the long haul.
cabbagepatch
I don't think anyone around here could complain about noise, I do worry however about narrow minded people whittering about avian flu
chelsea
I don't think anyone around here could complain about noise, I do worry however about narrow minded people whittering about avian flu i agree about avian flu. At some point the media will blow it all out of proportion and people with little knowledge and understanding of how birds can actually get it will be pointing the finger. Cate in NZ
I'm very lucky i that I have great neighbours, and I've never had any negative comments about the hens. I have on a couple of occasions had a mildly agitated neighbour (she is 90!) requesting that I go and collect the visiting hen in her back garden...... but they've stopped visting since we raised the boundary wall Another neighbour loves them so much that he comes and collects chicken poo from us for his compost heap
One Man Banned
Our neighbours love them, and bring little treats round for them, Some neighbours over the way said a few months ago that they hadn't realised we had them, but swore she could hear chickens and the family thought she was mad! Then one day she was cleaning the daughters bedroom she looked out of the window, saw the Eglu and the chooks! They are quite a novelty here I think A xx

craftyhunnypie
We didn't tell any of our neighbours! As we were a bit worried, but in the deeds to our house it says we are allowed chickens & even a pig! The only thing we are not allowed is a horse or donkey! SO there! The day hey arrived I thought oh heck what about the bright omlet van on our front, but no one saw it! It was only afterwards when the chooks met the cat and they eyeballed each other that they set of crowing & buck buck buck bwahhhhhhhhhing that my neighbours whose garden backs onto ours ( we live on a corner ) came round. These neighbours were fascinated & brought their Grandchildren round. They often bring salad, bread etc round for them & they help us use up some of our eggs! The other side, the neighbours are hippies, grow their own veg & are really quiet. I have given them some eggs & often catch them looking at the chooks whilst hanging out the washing, but I daren't ask them if they'd like a shovel of "Ooops, word censored!"e for their veg!!!!! Not really a nice subject! I do cringe though when they lay an egg & let the whole world know! I just think oh heck!
