gareth
Hi I have a frizzle pekin bantam that appears to be broody. Shes been like it for a couple of weeks. I have strated locking the hens out of the coop in the day time as were getting no eggs anyway. Trying to get her to snap out of it. What is worrying me is that her crop is very pale and she isnt looking that healthy. When she is locked out though she is walking about feeding etc. she also makes a funny chirpy noise while shes been like this. Is it normal for broodys to look under the weather. I have a theory as hes been on the nest loads she hasnt been feeding as much as usual etc is this correct?
madchickenlady
The noise is the clincher! Broody's do look a little pale in the face, and do eat less. Have you tried sticking her in a broody cage? Basically, stick her in a wire bottomed crate, so that the cool air circulates underneath her. Make sure she has food and water, and can see and be seen by the rest of the flock during the day. Leave her for at least 48 hours, although mine always need 72 , and she should get bored The problem with leaving her as she is, especially at this time of year, is that she will lose condition. Best to knock it on the head asap.
Egluntyne
There is an excellent article by Mrs Frugal about Broody hens in the FAQ section. **Click**
