kitbag
Hi guys! I am thinking about what I what to do when I leave school. I have thought very hard, and come to the conclusion that what I would really love to do is become an occupational therapist. However, what I would really love to do more than anything is become an occupational therapist in the army, helping soldiers, but I have looked on the army website, and occupational therapy isn't a job on there!! I know that occupational therapists work in the army, but I don't know where to find it! Can anyone help me?? If anyone is or has any experience of occupational therapy, I would be very grateful for your thoughts!! Thanks guys xx
Patricia W
My sister is one. She trained at Oxford Brookes University but I'm sure others do it as well. She works with the elderly but there are lots of options - and a great shortage of OT's as well as other therapists. Other than that - I know nothing about the army. Maybe others do? The Dogmother
See if you can find an association for OTs and call them to see if they know anything about getting into the army.
kitbag
Thanks for replying Patricia W! If I don't go to the army, i think I would want to do pediatrics! I know that OT is definately something I want to do though, whereever I end up! Oxford Brookes looks good! I also like the look of Southampton and West of England! Thats a good idea Claret thanks!! Lydia
My sister is a pediatric OT and works for various local authorities in Reading. She trained at Liverpool University and loved it. There is a trade association - The British Association of Occupational Therapists and College of Occupational Therapists and I am told their journal (BJOT) is good too. I'm sure they could tell you more about working in the army.
BeckyBoo
Hi Kitbag, I've got good contacts at Headley Court which I know is a bit of a trek, would you like me to see if I can arrange a one off visit for you? Can't promise but my Dad and I go there every year BeckyBoo
The Dogmother
I'm sure you've thought of it, but how about trying to get some work experience with some OTs? It'll be good for your CV and you get to pick their brains too.
LisaP
Hi Kitbag, one of my children had occupational therapy for a couple of years here in Bracknell, at a local medical centre. The therapists weren't based there but would come for a specified day and I think they came in from Reading/Wokingham and they often had trainees accompanying them. Not sure but I have a feeling they came from Royal Berks Hospital - might be worth trying them. By the way my daughter, who I think is the same age as you, wants to be a doctor and she likes the look of Southampton for training too. Must say as well that the work they did with my son was splendid, we were very grateful and I think it must be a very rewarding career. kitbag
Thanks for your replies everbody! Thankyou for your very kind offer BeckyBoo! Would it be ok if I got back to you in about a week or so? My Mum wants me to wait until the Royal Berks hospital gets back to me first! I hope that's ok! BeckyBoo
Course it is, give me a shout if you want and I'll make enquiries, like I said can't promise anything but you never know. Good luck with the Royal Berks! BeckyBoo
Chicken Licken
why not contact the army careers office - if they don't know they will find out for you. I guess you would end up joining the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) as that is who Physio's belong too. You would be a professionally qualified officer or soldier and I suspect they are recruiting!! Contact them now and they might even fund you trhough Uni.
