Six Reasons not to give Christmas Gifts

Recommended Posts

Something with some thought, meaning & love is all that's needed (so long as it isn't socks)

But socks can be bought with love and thought too.....ES (18) is called Dan, however a teacher at school called him Dave about 4 years ago and it stuck, so his friends call him Dave rather than Dan in fact some of them don't even know his real name!

We have been to people's houses in the past to collect him and the parents of the house where he is don't know anyone called Dan!:D

So I have bought Dan/Dave two pairs of socks for Christmas, one with Dan on and one with Dave on. :D:lol:

We told the family a few years ago not to buy Christmas or birthday presents for us, only for the kids as we were fed up with trying to buy decent presents which we knew would be useless. My family were fine with it but it took a while for MIL to come round. Goodness knows why, she never liked what we bought her and actually said one year that she was very disappointed with what we'd given her, bloomin' cheek

I actually wish people wouldn't ask me what I want for Christmas as I never know! I usually end up asking for something that I don't really want because I can't think of anything else.

I totally agree with this. I have a hard enough problem deciding what I should buy for other people, never mind deciding what they should buy for me. My mother was terrible at this... usually from at least early October. I don't really like Christmas that much so the fact that it "starts" mid way through the year just annoys me and stresses me out.

I am in the fortunate situation that I am not too badly off so that if I want something, I can generally buy it for myself... leaving aside from the fact that most of the things I might want would probably be too expensive to ask somebody to buy for me anyway. e.g. I might consider "wanting" a new iPod because my current one has "only" 40Gb and I can't fit my whole library on it. I could buy myself one...but my old one still works perfectly well so I feel I probably shouldn't. I certainly wouldn't ask my mother to get one for me for Christmas.

After a number of years just plain refusing to answer the question, I finally had a rant last year and I told my mother how much I hated being asked because it smacks of "I can't be bothered".

Last year OH gave me a wonderful romantic present (for Christmas and Birthday, since my birthday is just after Christmas) and I didn't have the slightest clue. The only hint he made (which I didn't see as a hint at the time) was to ask whether I'd be OK to "do something" if it meant I had to miss a certain race meeting. The present turned out to be a visit to California, taking in two ice hockey matches, a baseball game then down to Long Beach to marshal the IRL race and catch up with some old friends. He wrapped up some trinkets as hints (mostly chocolate which I wasn't that impressed with as I don't need to put on any more weight). So I had the pleasure of unwrapping the hints, guessing what it was for and then looking forward to an amazing holiday.

I bought OH a phone he wanted and which he knew about (I didn't feel confident buying it until I knew it was the one I wanted). The phone shop supplied a very distinctive gift box so I got him something else to put in the gift box and put the wrapped phone on my mother's pile of presents (with strict instructions not to open it). OH's face when the phone wasn't in the box was a picture.

Oops, I realise I have wandered slightly off topic and I'm being hassled to get ready to go out.
