abwsco
I've a query re the pilchards. Checked in the supermarket tonight and all the ones I found had salt added. Are these OK as I wasn't sure so didn't get any. Also, is there any guidance as to how much cat food, tuna etc to give?
Jools
I wouldn't risk anything with salt in as it's toxic to chickens. Better safe than sorry.
Egluntyne
I rinse it thoroughly, as we always advise with tuna.
The Dogmother
Mine have never had pilchards (the dog would never forgive me!) but they often have tuna in spring water, especially when moulting. Seaweed or alfalfa are other good conditioners. I've seen some by a company called Crossgate Bioenergetics (what a lovely name )
Janty
I have put all mine onto Allen and Page's Specialist Poultry Breeder now to help build them up over the winter. It's got higher protein levels than layers pellets.
Jools
Me too Janty, mine go onto breeders to help them through the moult, I can highly recommend it. In fact l'm thinking about keeping my bantams on breeders all year round, provided I can get it of course.
Saronne
How 'bout sprouted seeds, e.g. alfalfa, cress, etc.? I often do them for us and share with my girlies. Saronne
Chook n Boo Mum
I rinse the pilchards thoroughly too, when I use tuna I usually use the one in oil which once drained off goes to the dogs to give them all lovely shiny coats ......and revolting fishy breath Bought some more Poultry Spice today to add to the cocktail of goodies they get over the course of the week Sha x
Leicester_H
I've never tried them on the dried stuff though. We put out dried cat food for our rescued hedgehogs - they always try to steal it when I refill the bowl (normally out of reach in hedgie feeder thingie) - I allow them to steal 1 piece each - I don't know if they like it or if its just forbidden 'fruit' H
