I feel like the hoover slayer but I'm on the hunt for yet another hoover. I've used a Dyson upright but I think I'd prefer a cylinder Dyson but I'm interested to know how it compares to an upright Dyson. Does anyone have experience of both who can provide a comparison? I'm concerned that the pick-up power might not be the same as an upright.

I've had a Dyson DC08 Turbobrush which is a cylinder for about 7 years. I've never got on with upright hoovers so I love this one and it is still going strong. Dyson do all sorts of versions of these cylinders now have you had a look at their website? Still picks up the same as when it was new.

Thanks for your reply. I have looked at their website but find it quite confusing because I really want to know if there are compromises made when switching from the upright to the cylinder ie less powerful suction. My husband is convinced they can't possibly be as good as the uprights and is concerned that the cylinder would be so good with the dog and cat hair.

In theory I have both a Dyson upright and a cylinder - I lent the cylinder to my sister a couple of years ago and haven't got it back yet

 

Anyway I think its pretty much a personal preference but I found pros and cons with both.

 

The cylinder one is much easier to get into small places and under furniture but I did find it hard work on the carpets - the suction is so good it takes a lot of effort to move it back and forth. The upright is excellent - I have a dyson ball 'animal' - it does all floors, as does the cylinder but of course doesn't get into those awkward places.

 

Both work really well and I have carpets upstairs and wooden floors downstairs so I know they do both.

 

You can buy cylinder accessories for the upright and so sort of get the best of both - if you know what I mean

If the suction is working too much on the carpets Lisa have you tried moving the slidey thing on the brush unit? That might help.

 

Just wanted to say Becca that we have a dog and a 6 year old so quite of bit of dirt gets walked back into the house from the garden. I've never had an upright so can't really compare (I have a dodgy back so the cylinder version is easier for me to move about) but I've been happy with my cylider and what it picks up and when this one konks out will definately buy another.

 

I'm sure Dyson would be very helpful if you either e mailed them or phoned them to ask.

My dyson's driving me nuts as the suctions playing up again (something wrong with the soleplate). Trouble is when it's working properly it's brilliant, so i've never replaced it. Dyson support are also brilliant -I rang them at 4.30pm and they're sending an engineer on Thursday!

 

Get it insured! I've even managed to explode mine (yes flames and everything) and they fixed it at home. Didn't cost me a penny extra. Trouble is it refuses to totally break so I can't get a new one out of them!!!

Why not get a better one such as a Miele. Mine still sucks like new after 15 years

I have had four Miele hoovers and to be honest I can't be bothered with the filters etc. In comparison, the Dyson is actually far better at picking up. My remaining Miele TT is still functioning but isn't as efficient as when it was new. I'm not keen on the build quality on the Dysons but the suctions good!

Mr. Dyson man was fabulous! He fixed it completely free of charge (thankyou insurance policy) and it works like brand new!

BTW all dyson parts are replaceable and recycled, so that works for me on the eco front too!

I love my Dysons, although they have been upright versions. I think the first one went kaput because it was used to hoover up chipped building bits, and it only works from the hose. It's still in my bedroom which has been a building site for a few years now. The latest one is better still, but I have 2 faults with it. One is that it is heavy and the other is that I get electric shocks from it - but then that happens with everything I come into contact with - even my children!

I had a Dyson upright which lasted ages, but eventually fell apart; I thought long and hard about the Miele as everyone raves about them, but really couldn't face paying out for bags as pet hairs do fill them up so quickly, so I bought a Dyson compact animal cylinder cleaner about 18 months ago and am very happy with it. I have a lot of laminate and wooden floors and stairs as well as stuff to hoover around and under and it does a great job - a bit noisy and needs emptying frequently, but not a problem for me. If I had big flat areas of carpet, I might have chosen another upright, but it has a good rotating carpet head which is fine on the few rugs and carpets I have.

I have a Dyson DC08 and I love it ( I've had it for about 10 years). I too have the insurance..........so far I have had two new tubes, one head, two cable reels and a full overhaul......the repair men have always been lovely ( and had a good laugh at the NooNoo sticker that refuses to come off)
