Essentials for keeping chickens.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Im quite new to keeping chickens and have had moo and lilly for just over 8 weeks now. I researched all the illnesses that they could get, but i am now worried as i feel as though im not doing anything for prevention. They are both doing really well and havnt had mites or worms or anythign like that. Please could any of you give me a list of must have things to have on hand, and also what each thing is used for. Also do i need to give grit with their feed, ive had an egg off each of them everyday, no softies at all.

This would be great.

Thanks

if you feed layers mash then i belive that already contains a certain amoutn of grit. We just provide extra poultry grit in various tubs so they can help themselves, it is a good idea t make sure it's available to them.

As for essentials, we've tended to buy them as we needed them as the only essentials really are food and water :D

Garlic powder is good to add to their food to keep their poo smell down and it's also good for them anyway.

when you come to worm them you'll need some flubenvet.

it's good to dust them every so often with diatom/mite powder.

poutry shield is good for keeping their coop/eglu clean and parasite free

stalosan F is good to sprinkle in their bedding nd around the run to keep nasties away (you can google for a full description of all it does)

garden lime to dig into the soil to neutralise the acid build up due to their poo (if their run is on soil)

perhaps some anitbacterial wound spray or powder would be good to have on hand, just in case.

avipro is good if you have a poorly hen.
