susanbb
M y white leghorn, Ruby has been laying for the past 2 weeks, but unfortunately the past 2 days the eggs have had no shells. I've given them chicken grit. Is there anything else I should do?
The Dogmother
That depends on the grit you've been giving them susan. Generally, they use normal grit for digestion, but require either pulverised oyster shell for calcium or alternatively you can wash and bake some eggshells (if you have any), then grind them in the liquidiser and mix with their feed. Some people here swear by Shellstim too. Good luck!
chocchick
I grind the egg shells with a pestle and mortar. You put Shelstim in the water and it works as long as they drink the water and not from dirty puddles , bless them I think it's the time of year, I've had quite a few from Trinny and it's come up on the forum a bit I've noticed. Egluntyne
I've used Shellstim lately and have noticed an improvement in the quality of the shells.
ballgunner
maybe just wait for a couple of days for the egg to absorb the calcium
