Newbies settling in.

Recommended Posts

Well some of you already know that I have adopted some of Egg Lou's babies as she is moving and can't take all the birds with her.

Here they are in their eglu

The flash did startle them a bit.

We brought them home on Monday afternoon and they seemed to be a bit bemused but had a good scratch around the leaves. Tuesday both big girls and small girls found each other and were yapping at each other and the first blood was drawn by one of the pekins pecking Squirt (who then retaliated) - she had to have some wound powder on her wattle and the other birdie was fine! Yesterday all hell let loose with all birds yelling at the top of their voices. Then Apache got into the run and pounced on Skye while OH was on duty. I herded her out and the little ones were fine. Then Skye squared up to Patch from behind the wires. Rather funny to watch as Skye looked like she was on a bungee and Patch fluffed up her feathers and stretched up her neck, no harm done because they both got a squirt before they pecked - and that was it for the rest of the day. The banties were allowed supervised free range with the big girls later that evening. Kitty (AKA Squirt) was quite happily foraging among the big girls - not one peck. Tipsy did do a double take and stepped back as if to say "What's that!" then carried on picking up the corn. All went very well, although the pekins stayed further back, until the big girls went to the top of the garden. Big girls were given tea and locked in while littlies continued to explore for a little longer.

Today was much quieter, although Squirt pecked at Skye. But then Skye pecked at Tipsy and Tipsy ran away - much to OH's amusement. Nothing nasty today just ordinary pecking and not much of it either, OH and I both froze watching the free range session. Although the pekins are picking on the silkie, so no wonder she is happy with the other girls.

Eggy's keeping her old girls and the brahma (soooo beautiful) and her partridge silkie. Her lovely Oscar broke his leg in the summer so she has been trying to sort him out and he needs so much physio. It's all happening to her - I think she needs a really happy new year. I'm just glad I got in touch at the right time - and she can come and visit whenever she likes - they are such healthy little birds, she has done such a good job looking after them. Just goes to show you never know what is around the corner.

OK Chickle I will be out there with my camera this afternoon while they are ranging. Camera in one hand water pistol in the other, treats in a bowl in my mouth trying to juggle everything just for you Chickle!

Took a couple of pics, but they were mainly hiding behind a hawthorn tree. Kitty was the only one trying to have a mud bath, so was easy to get. Must get a few more pics while they are ranging. Quite a long free ranging session today - big girls stayed at the top, little ones below. Only Squirt chased off Mini who was trying to bath in the pit and then pecked at Kitty. She was lifted up and away and forgot all about it. Then later Skye attacked Tipsy yet again and like before she ran up the garden whingeing all the way. I picked Skye up and told her not to do that. Well lets see what happens tomorrow - I wonder if she has ears like my 2 teens - what goes in one ear quickly goes out the other!

:lol::lol: Soundl like a good juggling act koojie.

Ah well, still have a little patience left, will save it just for you and those pictures.

Will look forward to seeing them later :D Sounds like they're having quite a good time there though. My big girls were freeranging today but the babies just stayed in the run. I think they quite like having the place to themselves while the big girls are out!

Well a bit more of a kerfuffle today - Squirt obviously fancies her chances and so does Apache (who is normally Queen Bee - Sioux has now had her moment of Queen while Patch was moulting) - and now everybody picks on Kitty - who doesn't seem to give a monkey's - she just carries on doing what she wants to do, be it eating or bathing. She does wander away from everyone, although Tipsy seems to be fine with her - probably because she's the only diddy bird that doesn't have a go at her! Lots more pics taken and hopefully a nice one of the pekins catching the last of the sun. Just need Erin to load them up for me (as she's tidying her bedroom we might see her next year  ) - but after dying her hair black and getting it all over the utility room, I expect the pics will be marked as MY STUPID MOTHER'S PICS - or something like that.

Hi :D

thought I'd grab a quick moment to see how they are doing..

My garden seems very bare with only the 4 left but so pleased they have gone to you as best possible place although still Very odd not having MINI bashing on the kitchen door  odd to think I had 13 in the garden just 6 months ago!

I hope they all settle down as the 3 pekins can be rather strong willed to say the least and won't take and flack from your biggies!

I think the others are bit confused paticularly Beans as she hatched all of them.. bless.. old lady now so I'll give her a quiet retirement and try to make the house move as gentle as possible for my final 4.

Keep the updates coming and I will try and visit when life settles down a bit.. Oscar still takes 3/4 hours a day of care but it now putting weight on the leg so fingers crossed he's walking by summer and can get out of his stable for first time in months!

Thanks again for taking them I know they will have great home for life and as my first and second 'babies' it is great to know they will be loved so much :D

OK here you go - these were all taken today:

Mercedes - have lots of these - she must be the poser.

Then Mini - quite hard to get on her own because she's usually with a group.

P1020412.jpg

Skye looking quite the innocent one.

P1020403.jpg

This is how she usually is - in full whinge (a mini Apache  ) Kitty is behind.

P1020406.jpg

Then little furball Kitty - always on the move - in here as a group with Mercedes at the back and Mini.

Catching the last rays of the sun this evening.

Hi Eggy! Here they all are busy exploring. They look quite at home (much to Apache and Squirts disgust). They aren't whingeing quite as much - mainly because they know they will be allowed out later on. It's just the odd squaring up between the wires - when they are free the fat ladies usually wander off leaving Squirt to do the stalking - and Tipsy just watches out of curiosity (not getting near that little Patch - she's mean to me  ).

We've now had 4 little eggs, but I haven't a clue who's laying them - but Kittysquirt is crouching - so is Mini. :?

Oh, and I have ERIN IS AWESOME.

Ah well, Eggy did all the hatching and rearing (with help from broody Beanz), Debs.

Definately worth waiting for Koojie, they are absolutely lovely. Im in love with Mercedes too, shes a stunner.

Mini is beautiful  but then i may be a bit bias as she is the double of my little Pickle

They look so happy wandering around your garden, my banties are not interested in coming out of the run into the garden and Im not sure if its because of the snow or because they are enjoying the peace while the big girls are out.

They are beautiful Koojie :D

and Im sorry but I have to agree - Erin is the greatest - for putting on those fabby photos
