Bad Chicken Mummy

Recommended Posts

I got up early, made the warm chicken mash with extra corn and raisins and got a glug full of warm water. Opened the back door, went outside to put them in the run before opening the pop-hole on the cube only to find...

... Gwennie walking towards me outside the run, protesting rather a lot, and asking to be let in throught the run door.

It turns out I hadn't fixed the egg port hatch properly when I reassembled the cube after cleaning yesterday, and it had fallen open and Gwennie had got out.:oops:

I feel SO BAD! A fox could have got them in the night and they must have been freezing cold last night with the hatch either partially or completely open. And I'd made everything so cosy for them after cleaning too because I knew a cold snap was coming.

I feel a severe attack of chicken-spoiling coming on today.

The girls look fine, they are just protesting a bit, but then they protest every morning anyway.

I have made amends! I have dug out all the bedding in the chicken run and replaced it with lovely fresh Hemcore, and re-arranged the log assault course so they have something interesting and new to climb on when they are in the run.

They have been FR with me all morning "helping". They have now had lots of mealworms and some grapes. They must have been hungry because they have eaten all of their morning porridge, so I'll give them some more before I go out at 3pm.

They have forgiven me and I have duly had three eggs delivered to me this morning.

I will definitely check the egg port more carefully in future! I think I didn't engage the bottom bit properly when I shut it and it had just fallen out.

I still feel very :oops::oops: though.

Oh dear, I'm sure we've all done it at some point or other. I accidently shut one of my girls in the run all night and out of the cube. I felt awful until I notice the next night that she actually wanted to roost in the branches in the run. I just popped her back in.

I'm always laying in bed wondering if I have actually put the egg port door back on properly!
