Debb11
Hi I;ve just attempted to trim one of my ex-batts nails as afew were abit longer than the others, i was being very careful and aware of not to cut too much, the 1st nail was fine so i thought i would just try another still only trimming just alittle, but this one bled, not sure what to do no. Help!!! I'm not doing very well am i? Debb
Raina
Don't worry, you've most likely hit the quick. We have this problem with our border collie (she has very long quick in her claws)we just add some plain flour to clot it,it normally works pretty much strait away. Raina
Hmm,I'll just go have a look what i can find on google EDIT: Just found this http://earthclinic.com/Pets/nail_injury.html I'm not sure if it'll work but i've read somewhere that if it still doesn't stop bleeding to add some super glue to the claw (only if you can't get to the vets)
Debb11
Thanks you Raina for looking on the net, i tried the flour but it didn't work, phoned the vet and she told me to s"Ooops, word censored!"e her nail down a bar of soap to seal the hole or put a ice cube on it, i tried the soap so i'm just waiting now, i've left her in my kitchen at the mo Thanks again Debb
CluckyBucks
I took one of my girls down to the vets to have her nails trimmed and they cut one too short and she wouldnt stop bleeding from the end of her toe and they managed to stop it somehow, the flour sounds like a good idea. Hope you find an ideal solution. xx xx
Egluntyne
Corn flour or soap should stop it.
Debb11
Thanks Egluntyne and Raina I didn't have cornflour only SR Flour if that makes any difference, but it didn't work for me, my trousers are covered in blood and flour and so was my floor, at my wits end because the blood kept seeping through the flour and dripping everywhere i had to phone the emergency vet, she told me to try the soap and that did work, or try a ice cube. Even though i was aware of not cutting off too much and I was being very careful, accidents do happen, I've learnt i won't be trying to trim their nails again!!! The Dogmother
They don't normally need their claws clipping, especially if they free range regularly. Vet wound powder is pretty good at staunching bleeding.
Debb11
Hi Claret I wouldn't normally trim their claws,it's just that I had only just got her a week earlier and I think her nail could have been missed when they might have been trimming them.she and the other two ex batts are not FR yet,but soon,I just want them to get their strength up at the mo because they still need to be intruduced to the other three. Thanks anyway Debb
The Dogmother
No worries, why not ask your vet if they can just dab it with the sliver nitrate pencil to stop it.
