Dragonbreath
Hi everyone I took possession of an Eglu and two chickens on Friday 15th January, just as the snow was clearing. I am absolutely thrilled with my two girls called Millie and Hilda, named after a couple of old ladies that I loved. My family think I am absolutely nuts as I always try to mimic what all my animals and birds say, and these two new additions seemed to take to me very quickly. I think the toast and marmite treat in the afternoon on the first day, did wonders for them, as the next morning I had a lovely brown egg and two further eggs with very soft shells. I'm not sure if these were from Hilda who is still growing her wattles. Reading the blurb from the Omlet website, it said that I may not get any eggs for a few days/weeks due to the girls' move to a new site. But finding the eggs the next day was fantastic and I was able to get my first taste of two eggs on toast (one was a little bit too small and the soft shell had broken so did not use it). So I went from a a new mum, to a grandma, then a cannibal all in the space of a couple of days Some things have concerned me, namely Mr Fox who seems to pop up in lots of chats, so I have ordered myself a Fox deterrent as suggested by someone on this site. I don't want to lose them like I did my daughter's rabbits many years ago. One thing though, Omlet do say that the runs are Mr Fox proof, but someone said that one managed to break through the joins in the run. Is this a one off or should I do as was suggested, clip more ties onto the joins? You can tell I am a nervous new mum can't you!!
Chook n Boo Mum
Hi DB, Welcome to the magical world of chooks. Re the foxproofness of the run, I have never felt the need to reinforce the joins with anything more than a few extra run clips as they get a bit older...they do get a little brittle with time and sunlight, and frost presumably. It won't do any harm to adopt a belt & braces approach if it makes you a more confident chook mum..and yes cable ties are an excellent invention, much used and loved by Omleteers everywhere! Patricia W
Welcome! I think the run is fox resistant and it is the eglu and cube which are fox proof. I think the instances of foxes getting into the run have been rare. One was when someone put it on newly dug earth and the fox was able to dig underneath and I think the eglu door was open. I always shut my eglu and cube doors at night, but not every one does. Then again, I let some of mine free range all day, even when I'm not in - others wouldn't do that. You have to make your own decision based on your acceptance of the degree of risk you'll take. Look at the fox attack thread at the top and you'll pick up a lot of tips from there too. Enjoy them- they are addictive! Tricia
