I received a letter (on proper paper - remember them?) from my best friend today

 

Sadly her father passed away some years ago but recently when my friend and her mum were cleaning out their garage (which is vast) they found an old suitcase which must have been placed there by her dad years ago and which they had never seen before - it was filled with papers and letters from the beginning of last century written by members of my friends family

 

One letter was written by her great uncle (who was 19 at the time) from the trenches with a surprising amount of good humour, another described his wedding in 1926

 

There were also photos, drawngs and medals

That's a real treasure trove. More interesting than piles of coins. I would spend so much time reading through all that. Your friend must feel very lucky to have such a tangible link to her past.
