sminkypinky
Got up to find a fox in the garden had got to my 2 girls. One dead, the other has nasty bite wounds on her back, but not bleeding much now. I've got her inside tried to get her to have water & some food and bathed wounds with salt water. She's obviously very stressed & is just sitting panting with her beak open. Should I get some sort of dressing on or just leave it open & get some wound powder. I'm thinking I'll give her a couple of hours before getting to vets as I'm assuming she'll need antibiotics. But looking at her I'm not sure whether she'll last the day I don't think I can dispatch her myself though so am trying to keep her comfy for now. What else should I do? sandyhas3chucks
As I understand it it is the shock that gets them. I assume she is now indoors somewhere warm dark and quiet? If she makes the next few hour r so, you are in with a chance. There is lots you ca do, will go look at old posts for yu, but fr now warm, safe dark, quiet. Fingers all crossed Yes we used withchazel on cotton wool and dabbed on the wounds , we didnt dilute it at all as we acted fast- fox salvia is nasty stuff so its good to get it done while the wound is still open - our hen had a number of small puncture wounds as well as a huge hole in her bum but she made it. Glucose in water is v good for shock - honey works if you cant get glucose powder at this time of night. Let me know how she gets on. legend21
How is she, is she any calmer, everytime someone mentions fox I go out and check on the girls. Fingers crossed it all comes good for her
Egluntyne
Keep her warm and quiet in a darkened pet carrier or box. A few drops of Bach's Rescue Remedy in her drinking water might help. Bathing the wounds as you have done, with salt water is a good idea. Might be worth applying some veterinary Wound powder to them too. (Available at pet shops). sminkypinky
Well she's still with us. Took her to vet who gave antibiotic injection, some rehydration powder to put in water & cream to help wound healing, although I'd picked up wound powder earlier and applied that. Fingers crossed little Joan Jet pulls through. Lots of TLC & syringe feeding for the next 48hrs & hope for the best. He did say if the wounds had been much bigger he'd have recommended putting her to sleep, but her wings & legs don't appear to be damaged, just a chunk missing out of her back. Will update you with any news. Thanks for the help. Sminky

sminkypinky
Hi Sadly Joan died last night. I think the shock was just too much. She suddenly flapped wildly and that was it. Maybe heart attack? So our chucks have gone. We may get some more later in the year, but that's it for now. Very sad today looking at the empty coop.
