jjmack
Hi, Travelling to scotland at half term and need to stop en route. Have 3 children (3,7,10) and am happy to have them and us all in one room. We like premier inns but they say only 2 children and 2 adults in a room. This wasn't a problem last year as the youngest was in a cot. Any tips / ideas? We don't really want to book 2 rooms as the cost spirals then. Thanks! laurmurf
I would always recommend YHA hostels: they are incredible value for families and offer the option of self catering or meals. In my fairly extensive experience they've always been clean and are usually in some really beautiful spots too. Yes, there are bunk beds, but that never bothered us and we don't mind sharing with the kids either. You'll probably be able to find one on your route on http://www.yha.org.uk
Redwing
Travelodge offer a famly room, they are pretty spacious, one double bed and a huuuuuge sofa bed type thing
Chucky Mama
Isn't 5 a pain of a number? Why don't more hotels cater for families of 5 We usually get 2 rooms plus an extra bed in 1.
chelsea
Depending on where your halfway point is, we have always stopped at the Days Inn at Abington, Lanarkshire which is just south of Glasgow. It's right next to the road and very clean and cheap - it's like a Travelodge.

Why don't more hotels cater for families of 5 We usually get 2 rooms plus an extra bed in 1. 6 is worse! that's why we started staying in YHA hostels so much: stopped being able to have lovely holiday cottages, couldn't afford hotel rooms (even travelodges), nearly died of stress sneaking in 2 younger boys to Centre Parcs under a blanket in the footwell of the car....so started staying in hostels. Have never looked back and now we actually prefer to stay in them (especially as they take Tesco clubcard vouchers towards your stay). chickencam
We have the same problem and now have to book 2 rooms at a Premier Inn eldest is 16 so counts as an adult, not too bad when they had the £29 per night offer though. More hotels need to wake up to larger families.
freddie
we once pulled a boy through a window into our room (we did know him, honest!!) rather than pay more!!! no one took any notice when we forgot, and all trouped out past reception the next morning!!! Though, I have to say, three teenage(12ish) boys and two adults and a load of wet wetsuits etc was not what you could call fragrant. We now know never to feed Henry sausages

iar fach goch
We are in same boat (and OH loves reminding me that he warned me this would happen when I decided I wanted another baby!), don't know if this website helps, but may be worth taking a look http://www.roomfor5.co.uk
jjmack
Thanks thats brilliant. I think we we sneak the 3 year old in as needing a cot this time and just whip the mattress out. But certainly a great site to use in the future
iar fach goch
I've just used it to find a stopover on our way to France, travel agent had us book two rooms in larger hotel, but with a little research, site has come up with a few options saving us over a £100. jjmack
Hi, last year I posted about the issue of having far too many kids to fit into a premier inn room or similar. Well I have had a result today. I felt a bit guilty sneaking no 3 into the room without booking her in, even though she is small enough to get away with she is almost 4 and would probably become ver y communicative as we were going in blowing the cover completely. There was no option on the website to book 3 additional beds, and it didn't say anywhere that you could have 3 in a room, so I thought I would ring and just see if they were happy to sneak her in. Anyway the one in Glasgow (bearsden - its great) said no problem whatsoever they would put 3 beds in the room. So I then rang the one in Kendal for another night and they said that even though they don't have the additional bed facility at that inn, we could have the mattress from the travel cot on the floor or we could bring our own blow up mattress!!! Fantastic, so all that stressing about telling lies can now be sorted by just taking along a blow up mattress and making a call. I feel so much better that I have been upfront. And it works out cheaper than the youth hostel in kendal, which wass going to be £90. Fab premier inn. So moral of the story make the phone call and it should go your way! Can well recommend it there, and I'm sure other Days Inns would be just as good, they're also dog friendly, should that be an issue!
Krysia
hate to be a party pooper (and have t admit to lying about kids ages before now!) however sneaking kids in is actually very dangerous. in the event of an emergency and evacuation they might rescue 4 bodies not knowing there are 5 in there? I know this might seem a bit doom and gloom but when it comes to staying overnight I think honesty is the best policy. Also as jjmack has found if you actually ring and ask its amazing what you can get. With regards to big families a lot of these corporate chains wont change overnight. the whole world is geared up to families of 4. Now more and more places are geared up to 3 kids with cheaper options for more kids but we decided on 2 children as we thought we could give them everything we would want to. I would love 3 but reason and OH have made us stay with 2. I have 2 friends with big families, 1 has 6 and struggles with hols etc but never moans, they made the descision to have that many kids and cope and deal with it exceptionally well! I couldn't do it. But the other has 4 and moans non stop about the cost. Sorry but you should have thought about that before. Kids are not for xmas they cost money 2 kids will cost more than 1 and 4 will cost more than 2 its not rocket science,
chickencam
Good result It is sometimes amazing what you can get by asking a polite question. We have 3 children, and we have only used a Premier Inn that is local to my inlaws and 2 of them have stayed with them and 1 with us. Ours are now too old to have all in the same room, but it looks like things are changing for larger families. The children can't stand their Dad's snoring either Have a good trip.
