Beofre you raise your hands in horror let me explain !

 

I love the stuff... soooo .much better than bark chippings BUT .. its getting lodged in the eglu hatch door where the little monkeys are kicking it .

 

I cannot lock the eglu door down all the way anymore ... although it still feels secure as I cant open the door without lifting the latch .. But even so .. the handle is not all the way down which is a little bit of a worry given recent fox diggings ..

 

Any tips to keep this area from filling up, or indeed, how to get the stuff out again without lifting up the whole eglu ??

I use a pencil to dig it out!

can you hoover it out? I know it sounds silly but a hoover would probably get it all out in a few seconds.

 

I know what you mean as that was one bug bear of mine when I used the eglu.

I had some sucess with putting a slab under the doorway so there was nothing in the immediate area to kick in to the Eglu doorway and stopped the Aubiose in the Eglu tray just short of the door

Someone (I think Sheila/Lesley) said to cover it with a thin carpet tile/lino, it was with all the cold weather and the doors were freezing stuck.

 

I'd use the handle of a spoon - works for the tortoises viv

mine used to getrs all around the hinge etc aswell, I have an old hoover that I only used for old jobs so when I ahve to use my eglu again I will use that

I have packed it down so much trying to get the handle to lock down properly that I doubt any vacuum cleaner would work now .

I will try a pencil and dig dig dig !

i had that probelm and went the expensive solution and bought a cube- whoops!

I have to say I agree I love my cube. I did buy another eglu, after selling my eglu to fund the cube, but only because I thought it would be good for an emergency.

ok - so this is how it goes...

I went out this afternoon armed with a garden peastick and started digging the stuff out .. I then pushed all the excess aubiose away from the front of the eglu [ As much as I could without dislocating my arm as I was doing this through the egg port door.]

 

After several checks the door was closing and the handle locking beautifully .

 

So..anyway .. I went out tonight to put them to bed ..and the little monkeys have kicked all the aubiose back to the front of the eglu in a huge pile - I think they are dustbathing in it -and the handle wouldnt close all the way down again..

So I basically had to jump up and down on the handle squishing all the aubiose back down into the hole to make sure the door locked..

i have a metal tent peg, have to flick irt out every night since one has decided it all needs clearing all the time as you say, monkeys!

I have the large slab in front of the doorway option to keep the Aubiose/Hemcore away and that works a treat.

mmmm.. I was about to say that I could put some spare bricks there... but not sure if they would block the door from closing ...

Will have to see in the morning ......

 

roll on the concrete slab drying and me making a decision w.r.t a tony WIR... then I can put the eglu on a table !! Problem solved [ and will only cost several hundred pounds ]
