My chickens are egg-laying machines!

Recommended Posts

I just can't get over how wonderful my chookies are. They have been laying 1 egg each every day for the last 3 weeks! Even through the coldest weather they were averaging 18 a week between them and now its 3 eggs a day, without fail.....if they were an egg-laying olympic team, I reckon they would get the gold :clap::clap: ....and every time I collect them I feel like they are giving me presents for looking after them so well :D:D GOOD GIRLS :D .....I love them to bits!

They have layers pellets and mixed corn for the basics and then they get all sorts of treats too - hot porridge oats (especially on very cold days) , sweetcorn, peas, stale mixed seed bread (I soak it in water), spaghetti, green leafy vegetables from the garden (I often boil or steam the tougher outer leaves of brocoli and cabbage) - the green veg makes the yolks very deep yellow/orange colour and so deliecious! I also crunch up their egg shells, often cooked in with the porridge or veg, so they get them all back!

Also I let them free range the entire garden all day long most days, and dig up worms for them sometimes  . So they have eaten everything they can find that was left from the growing season, including flower plants like dianthus. They have made quite a mess everywhere, I might add - naughty girls!

I've only had them since September, so this extravagant free ranging will have to stop this spring, otherwise I will have no crops or flowers for us to enjoy :) . We are going to make a large enclosure for them to free range instead ie we will fence off the bottom end of the garden - still quite a large area (about 30ft by 10ft) but they won't be able to cause the havoc they have created any more in my veg beds, borders, patio and paths. :shameonu::lol: I am not going to let them walk all over me like this any more!

I thought mine were unusual laying an egg each day per chicken, but they keep doing it. Since November, Megan and Gwennie have each had one day off per month, and Blodwyn one day off per week. Otherwise they are egg-laying machines!

They just get pellets plus corn, and a porridge once a day of crumb, raisins, mealworms, poultry spice and occasional grapes. Plus FR most days during the week (confined to the run during the weekend). They get as much grit as they need, mixed with oystershell.

My little goldline faithfully produces an egg every day..I almost wish she wouldn't as I love her to bits and don't want her to wear herself out as hybrids so often do!!! My Light Sussex has come in to lay but she is still quite hit and miss...we get an egg every other day...ish - I think she's a bit too posh to lay and egg every day that would be a bit infradig!
