what types of grass are most practical for grazing chickens?

Recommended Posts

thanks for your reply Lavenders_Blue. I did a search on "chicken mix grass seeds" and got some hits. I'm gonna look into them :)

Ummm............ astroturf!

Sorry, that's not very helpful is it?

I think I remember someone on the forum had bought some grass seed that was a 'chicken mix'. I think it grew a tough root system to help resist the scratching. Hopefully they, or someone else who remembers this post and can help will be along soon.

thanks for the prompt advice, Iwescott

i checked the ebay listing, the price seems good value. do you think it might be a worthwile idea to buy some additional clover and mix it in?

Welcome to the forum :D

You can get pet and children grass which we used and would probably the best bet.

Just seen this, Economy Chicken Pasture. Poultry Ley Grass Seed on ebay - "For the rotational grazing of outdoor poultry." :D

I know a little bit about hydroponics but it requires some space for the set-up and also additional investments and I'm looking for the cheapest, simplest solution (I only have 2 hens). However, I know people who are more involved with the hydro/aquaponics systems. If you are really interested I could get you in touch with them....

Rye?

I had a thought about hydrophonic grass/wheat growing, for chickens confined to their runs. You could grow them a tray full and present it fresh to them each day. Do you think this would work?

SOMEONE ELSES :lol::lol:

I got a 5kg sack of the chicken mix.

they eat it as it is growing :D:roll:

I mad a good wee patch of the most expensive turf rtf I think, meant to be good for rain drought shade, rugby pitches.

maybe I was unlucky, maybe I wil post in spring, singing it's praises, but had it fenced of for near on 6 months now and looks worse than the normal turf I let the girls on :(

My garden looks shocking but I remember last year thinking it would never recover, but it did, Mostly.

but that was with less girls abd no "scratchers".

time will tell for me I guess :(
