Types of Grit - which is best ?

Recommended Posts

Mine seem to be eating LOADS of this at present - not sure why? Maybe because they have very limited free ranging at present ??

Anyway, my previous bag of grit was 'mixed grit' - they seemed to peck out the shell type content and leave what looked like small stones.

So last time, I bought oyster shell grit (seems quite large pieces approx 5mm (ish) - but also lots of smaller broken bits). Is this better ?

I have noticed that when I was away their dropping, there seems to be a lot of the oyster shell grit in it - is this normal ?

Thanks, as always, H

Mine are also consuming quite a lot of grit too. I have added crushed oystershell to their normal mixed grit. Even when they are FR most of the day, they are eating a lot of grit when I put them in the run.

But then they've been laying eggs since November so I guess they need the calcium!

It's because they are gearing up to lay more eggs as the daylight hours increase

 that is SO obvious!!! I was thinking that my lot were clearing their grit hopper and super speed and was wondering if their feed was deficient in something. It was at about 6.30 this morning so can I be excused for being a little dim? :anxious:

They can also get a bot obssessive about things like that - mine will ignore seaweed supplements unless I put them in a little galley pot, then they go mad for it.
