mathewjenkinson
Hi all, I got my two chickens and an last sept, before there arrival I had a lovely growing lawn.. Over the winter the girls have decided that the grass tastes so delicious that they have eaten it all! So im wondering, does anyone know a way to stop them from eating the grass? With the spring coming I want to start growing a nice lawn again and would rather not have my efforts hampered by the girls. Any ideas would be most appreciated! Thanks Mathew
Falkor
stop them going on it Sorry...but this is the only solution I have found. My girls have their own area of lawn in spring and summer whilst the grass is growing and able to replenish itself but over winter they are fenced off and are confined to the beds, hedged and their patio
chelsea
Yup, fence it off if you can. Chickens ruin grass in the Winter, ours turns to a mud patch every year and we re-turf in Spring. Spring/Summer will be fine as it's constantly growing.
mathewjenkinson
lol, yup i was so proud i spent the summer cultivating this lovely lawn and over the winter i could systematically see them working a different patch of it. My original ideas were that they were looking for grit, but now I know they are grass monsters, ill get some turf and hopefully will be kept short for me Thanks for your info Mathew
Tutti Frutti
I think we'll be keeping ours off the "lawn" all year round now, as our Black Rock is a frantic, obsessive digger and scratcher and makes whopping holes wherever she goes - she even helped us dig out the footings for our decking
brambles
It must be a black rock thing as Edna our pepperpot (black rock in there somewhere or is it RIR?) is an obsessive digger. We have omlet netting and have fenced them under our trees so that they can furtle and perch to their hearts' delight.
Chook n Boo Mum
Six black rocks over about a month managed to render what had been our pekins run a very scraggy brown mess...plus the edging of one necks length outside the netting ...bless them was not what DH muttered about them, the lawn had once upon a time been his pride and joy Once they were allowed to FR with the big girls it was much better, they had a huge area to trash & are slowly working their way round Fence the monsters into one area for the winter, its the only way Sha x
Ain't Nobody Here
I had a new lawn laid last April and haven't let them on it at all (apart from when they sneak over/through the netting ). It's the scratching that does for it, I wouldn't mind if they just pecked .
