I have ordered an Eglu Go and 2 chickens but now I'm wondering if I've made the right choice? I have been told that the run is only large enough for 2 chickens even though the Go (coop) says it can house 3-4 chickens (I was hoping to have 3-4 chickens). Currently there are no extensions to make the run for the Eglu Go bigger.

Does anyone have any experience of the Go and the Classic and if so what are the differences? Or, would I be better just to go for the Cube??

I would be grateful for any advice - the delivery isn't scheduled for another two weeks and I'm sure Omlet would be ok if I changed my mind at this stage!

Thanks,

Mandy

yes your right the run would be your area to think about :? too small without extensions for 3/4 L/F girls IMO.

Is there anyway you can change your order to a classic eglu which would give you the option to add extensions? There are sometimes reconditioned eglus at a reduced price if you call omlet?

edited for spelling due to now being fully awake yet...

I would ring and talk to Omlet.

I personally would go for a cube if you can afford one - I have one and they are great, but I think a classic maybe a better bet if you are definitely stopping at 3/4. Just beware that chicken keeping bug is very contagious, and you may soon find you have more than you intended, however you maybe stronger willed than me!:lol:

I have an eglu classic. It's great if you can use it as it is designed to be used and move it round the garden, but if you have it in a fixed place like mine which can't be moved, then unless you are very good at Yoga I would suggest a cube may be better. At the moment I only have two chooks in mine so don't have the run extension, I don't know how I'd cope with cleaning out the run if it had the extra length on it...it's a real struggle just as it is!!

Omlet are you listening??..we need a door that fits half way down the eglu classic run - and where has that walk in run got to?

with my eglu I just used to lift it off the area it was standing clean, and put back? I found that much easier than tryign to clamber through the door, me and small door??? errm no..

I agree Cookie...when I could move my eglu is was a breeze to clean..unfortunately when he saw the state of our lawn my OH had other ideas...and insisted the only place the chooks could go is in an area where I can't move the whole thing anymore. :wall: There's no way I could get through the door either. I'm five foot ten and hardly what you would call willowy :) .and even with my long arms and a long rake and working from both ends its an absolute pain to clean now

hmmmm I wonder it theres a way to make it easier for you....:think:

so not possible to move the eglu of of situ just for cleaning? I wonder if theres a way of adapting the run so you can have easier access. do you have a picture of where it is now so we can picture it and help you?

Thank you for your replies and advice!

I rang Omlet and they were very helpful and said that the run extension would be available in around 6 months time and it would then be possible for me to introduce another 2 chickens to my existing 2 chickens (which I am getting on 12th March!!!) As I only want 3-4 chickens (due to the size of my garden and proximity of neighbours on both sides and at the back) that is ideal! I liked the Go as the run door can be put on the end or on either side and it looks so easy to clean. They also said that if I got a cube for 4 chickens they would be rattling around and it would be drafty for them! That has put my mind at rest and I can't wait to be the proud owner of two chickens and a RED Eglu Go!!!

:D

At least you have it sorted - I don't have a run on the Go, but saw them at a show. It might be easier to have a 'mezzanine' level in it, having a flat roof and sides rather than the curved classic run - have some old wooden perches hanging from the roof for them to play on :)

The only thing I'd say bad about the Go is that you can't butt it up into the corner of a WIR having to get the the back to collect eggs.

I have a red Go too 8) - best colour

It depends if you're going to let your hens out to free range really as I definitely wouldn't want to keep more than 2-3 maximum in the run all the time. The eglu is plenty big enough for 4 hens, (I keep 4 quite happily). If you can let them free range a few times a week in the evening and give the hens enough to do then I'd think that 4 would be ok.

Yes, I plan to let them free range but only when we are here because there are lots of foxes in this area. I work 4.5 days full time but I'm home for an hour at lunchtime and only work 5 minutes away so I have all morning and then evenings too. Are they easy to get back into their run?! I am so excited! I went out last night - there were 10 of us having a quiet drink but all I want to talk about is chickens!!! Can't understand why others don't...???!!!

You've come to the right place here, then  . We all talk about chickens all day long  .

Chickens are easy to get back into their run if you bribe them with food  . Use the same container each time, fill it with corn or mealworms or another tasty treat, shout "chook chook chook" or other words of your choice, and they'll all come running  .

PS A WIR is also sometimes referred to as a "Tony" after Tony from Aviaries4u who built a lot of the WIRs on the forum (including mine) .
