Boybeck
What's the difference between Sussex Star and Light Sussex? They both look the same to me, but I'd like to get one. I already have two ISA Browns.
Space Chick
The sussex star is a hybrid based on a light sussex which is a pure breed
Boybeck
ah I see. I'm trying to work out which one I should get. Do hybrids lay more eggs?
Chook n Boo Mum
In theory a hybrid and a pure breed lay roughly the same number of eggs over their lifetime...a hybrid just pops them out over a shorted life span Sha x
kirstyfern
The hybrids are bred to be hardier and lay more per year but they don't live as long. They are smaller and eat less than the pure breeds. I prefer the hybrids in the garden. Hope this helps
Henhathnofury
I have a Light Sussex and she has a beautiful temperament. She laid the very first day she was with us and she only stopped during her moult. She is very healthy and happy. Can fully recommend her! sadietoo
I "acquired" a pre-loved Light Sussex just after Christmas. She is an absolute delight and I love her to bits.If you are interested in egg production she lays most days so quite reliable.I would thoroughly recommend. That said, I am not sure how she would compare with the Sussex Star on size but she is a fairly large girl.(considerably bigger than my Goldline). so if space is an issue you might want to go for the hybrid. AJuff
My sussex stars are like the Kray twins!!! However they lay really well.
chickencam
We wanted a Sussex Star when we got our newbies last summer, but they didn't have any left. We have a 3 year old Light Sussex. She is a total drama queen, hates to be handled, bok boks for ages at anything that upsets her and when she lays an egg. She is however a lovely looking large bird, much bigger than my hybrids, and she lays lovely eggs of consistent quality, usually about 5 per week in season, only stopping between about November and February. Sandychick
I've just got a Sussex Star - arrived here yesterday She is very pretty and amazingly friendly considering she has been here for less than 24hrs. Can't comment on her egg laying coz she's not old enough yet! She is lovely though.
Smiler33
Oh, so I've learned something else today. Tikka is a Light Sussex which I thought was a hybrid, but from this she's a pure breed! I checked on the website for the place I got the girls and she's definitely a Light Sussex. She's very sweet and sort of whistles; it's still early days but I think she's going to be a nice calm girl .... plus I have a suspicion she'll be the next to lay as her comb is redder than the others and a bit bigger ! beulah59
I have two Light Sussex, one's a sweetie, the other's a thug!
chickyhazel
I recommend hybrids as they're cheaper, and, in my experience, lay bigger eggs. Sussex Stars are beautiful and very friendly. Why not get one of each? After all, it's best not to introduce a lone chicken, so you could gety one of each! Problem solved!
