one of my girls has scaley legs, she was like this when we got her (sold a duff one!) lol i have been spraying her legs with scaley leg spray stuff and keeping them clean etc but it just wont shift!!!

 

any advice???

I've heard of people using surgical spirit to clean the legs and then coating the legs with Vaseline to smother the mites.

What do you mean by "won't shift"? Can you see the mites? From what I've gathered (on here, obviously!) the scales will remain raised for a long time (till they moult) so it can look like it's not cured but the mites are gone.

there are no visible mites that part of it is sorted, but her legs are very sore and look awful, she was bleeding at the weekend on one of her legs, i cleaned that all up, but the scales have been lifted quite a lot and are very crusty, she has been like this since we got her but it doesnt look any better.

Aw, what a state her legs were last year when you got her.

 

ANH is correct, the lifted scales will shed naturally(I also think it's with a moult, as far as I know), so will continue to look lifted until that happens, even if the original problem is sorted. Never be tempted to remove old scales.

 

Sounds as if you have been treating the mite problem well, just keep it up, Vaseline is a good suggestion too, and I'm sure she'll be looking a lot better in a few months.

My two have both had scaley leg but it went with the moult. I used vaseline.

As ANH and Teabag have said, the legs will continue to look manky until she moults off the old scakles; this can take some months.

 

In the meantime, she will be more prone to picking up the mites again (due to the raised scales) so keep up with your anti-lice/mite prevention programme.

I have been using Olive Oil spray on my newbie scaley leg gal and they are looking much better

 

But as Claret has said I will keep up with the prevention squirts of Netex too

NetTex, or similar, will get rid of the mites Em, but summat like Ivomec Eprinex (*not licensed for use on poultry in the UK) is preventative. Take your choice; if you use any of the sprays, then you'll need to do it regularly to zap the critters before they do much damage.

I've got the same problem with my blue orp. She's yet to moult though - so hopefully it will shift then. I'll give the vaseline a shot

 

I regularly use mite powder etc in the cube and her legs dont seem to bother her or bleed
