If anyone else is hatching, I'd love to share progress reports and chick photos (if I get any). I set 34 eggs on 13th March, so am hoping for chicks on Easter weekend! So eggcited!!! I have 6 lemon cookoo puds (real name in signature) and 5 silkies, black, white and partridge and 2 aracauna's. First time for us too. Good luck with yours. loopy12 Posted March 21, 2010 Author Share Posted March 21, 2010 Lots of Easter chicks... I am trying to hold out of the big candling session until tomorrow (day 10) as I have quite a few dark eggs. I have candled a few at random and seen a few moving embryos, a few where I could only see blood vessels and a few I couldn't see through the shell well enough to tell either way. Possibly I should've started out with half a dozen random eggs, but, well, I got excited so will just have to keep fingers crossed. I have: 7 cochins (maybe blue, black or white) 3 Blue jersey giants 4 wyandottes (may be silver or blue laced red) 4 black copper marans 10 orpingtons (which may be blue,buff, splash or black) 2 white laced red cornish and 4 ameraucana/australorp mix I am just hoping for maybe 25% to make it all the way... From what I've read, just use your nose - if it smells or starts to weep then get it out quick, but otherwise leave it until you're absolutely sure... Plenty of people don't candle and just wait until the end to see what pops out, so I think just beause an egg's not developing doesn't mean its rotten - is that right? Anyone? Results are in... 3 blood rings just discarded (very obvious blood rings). plus one I discarded a few days back. Of the 30 remaining eggs, 27 (!!!) have wriggly embryos in and the other 3 I wasn't sure (2 were black copper marans and the other was a big egg that I couldn't see through very well. All 3 I could see the air sac, yolk, white and a shadow but couldn't tell if it was moving .) 2 eggs I had questions on: One of the BCMs has a black blob at one end of the egg. It was stationary and seemed either to be attached to the inside of the shell of was part of the shell. What could it be? Could it just be an area of concentrated pigment in the egg shell? I think I saw movement on the other side, though not easy to tell in these really dark ones - sometimes I'm not sure if it just the yolk moving or my eyes going funny from staring at the bright light! The second curious one was a large orpington egg. I could see the embryo moving and the blood vessels, but at the edge of the vesselled area there almost looked like a start of a blood ring or a very thick/enlarged lot of blood vessels. The embryo was dancing away but could it be on its way out and forming a blood ring, or could some blood vessels have burst previously or something and will it hurt it???? Amazing to see. Some of the eggs were really clear and it was incredible. Others it was luck I saw the movement straight away and others I had to stare and squint at it from a few angles before being sure. craftyhunnypie Posted March 23, 2010 Share Posted March 23, 2010 Sometimes black ' blobs' in eggs can actually be the embryo's big eye. In my last lot I saw this in two of the eggs & wondered what it was - but the fact that the rest of its body was like a curve shape behind the blob, confirmed it to be its big eye. I wouldn't worry too much about the large blood vessels. You just never know until hatch day which will make it out. I've had eggs wiggle at day 18 - 19 & not hatch. But upon opening the eggs after - they had been fully formed but small & not absorbed the egg yolk properly. Sometimes their insides are outside their bodies.
