has anyone else experienced this

 

i have a hen sitting on eggs in one of my chicken houses and wont let the other hens lay in there, so they lay in the smaller house. the past few nights Henry cockeral has decided that he doesnt want to sleep in with the other hens which is fine his choice but he is now sitting on eggs that have been layed and wont let me collect them he hissed and pecks at me has any one elses cockeral done this

Goodness, how strange. Must be his female side coming out. Hens can behave like cockerels so I expect it can work the other way around. Is there someone around that can take the eggs away if you lift him off them? I'm sure he will be fine if he is used to being picked up. Good luck.

Its happend to me

I had i silkie what was sat on fertile eggs (And have now hatched) And she came off the eggs for 10 mins for somthing to eat and i found my pekin cockerel sitting on the eggs ...

Then when she went back to sit on the eggs i went back outside to see what was going on and they where both sat on the eggs

Spongebob has done this before now. He was very pecky. Hubby managed to temt him off with some sweetcorn.

I hae a pair of heavy leather gaunlets that I wear to remove a broody pecky hen from the nesting box - one can be really nasty, but she cannot get me through them.

I don't know of any cockerals doing this but I suppose getting him off is the same as getting a unnecessarily broody hen off.
