Weekly worming

Recommended Posts

I don't think that would be a good idea, I'm afraid, because it would tend to select for worms that are resistant to the wormer. The one dose a week would not be enough to eradicate the worms but would be enough for their biology to adapt to the wormer so they would become resistant.

When the vet came out to give my horse his annual vaccinations a couple of weeks ago, he was saying that in the horsey world they are trying to stop people from routinely worming without evidence of worms as it encourages resistance. He took samples away to test for worm eggs and, finding none, told me not to worm again for at least 6 months and to send in a sample again after 6 months to see if worming was actually needed. Although we can't do this for chickens (as far as I know), I am sure that the principle of not worming too often is sound. I would stick to worming every 3-4 months and give the full 1 week's course.

The same applies to human medicine with respect to antibiotics. If the full course is not taken or antibiotics are given too frequently, the bugs become resistant. This is why we now have "super bugs" in our hospitals :( .
