Chicken boarders

This may sound bizarre but one of my chickens has patch on it's neck and every time the feathers grow they get pecked out - by another chicken. I am sure I have read on here of people knitting jumpers for ex battery hens - I wondered about cutting a sock up (one of my children's should be the right size) so that the chicken can wear it on it's neck to protect the patch until the feathers grow back.

 

Does this sound crazy or do you think it would work?

I'm not sure that it is a good idea tbh.

 

I would try to address the pecking issue. Try some anti peck spray on the 'victim' and if that doesn't help, I'd put a bumper bit on the culprit.

I was thinking the same for my Carol who has had a bald neck since the end of last year, anti-peck spray and bumper bits on the culprit haven't worked, but I was worried about her getting caught on something and hanging herself .

they don't seem to like the taste of tea tree, and vaseline makes them wipe their beaks...

they are not rubbing them off on the grubs though are they?

Interesting you should say this as I have three out of my six that have bald patches round the neck and the grubs might be the answer.

 

I have kept an eye out for pecking and there doesn't seem to be that much going on round neck areas. They shouldn't have lice as I keep diatom everywhere and they are reasonably regularly checked.

 

I think it is the grubs!

try an old drawer for the food, they love to climb in and scratch whilst eating. (and almost free!

One of our girls is always bald at the front ... She constantly tbs herself on the chicken wire fence...

Some chickens do just have bald patches, but if hers is because of pecking try anti-peck spray. If you aren't comfortable with putting bumper bits on, watch the chickens and whenver they peck her spray them with water.
